  • No sound in Sibelius 7

I've just purchased my first Vienna package, Solo Strings I, so I'm probably doing something wrong, I just can't figure out what. I installed everything according to the instructions, and went back and double-checked to make sure everything was as instructed. I've read all of the PDF manuals that come with the CDs, and followed the instructions in the Sibelius and VSL YouTube video three times. Vienna Ensemble as a standalone works great, sounds beautiful. Sibelius recognizes it in the Playback Devices dialog--Vienna Ensemble AU type. I've tried using both VE Strings sound set (the one I imagine is the more correct to use with Solo Strings) and VSL Ensemble Special Edition, equally with no results. I've entered the midi channels and program names in the Manual Sound Sets section. When I load the String Presets for Sibelius in Vienna Ensemble, the matrices are already there, so I assume the presets take care of that. I save in both programs. Yet nothing. Any idea what could be wrong? Thanks.

  • Hello misterclare!

What you have described so far seems correct. What do you mean with "Yet nothing."? Do you get MIDI signals to Vienna Ensemble? That can be seen on the LED at the very left of the instrument list. Do you get any sound? Is it that the articulations do not change automatically?

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • I can play any of the instruments from within Vienna Ensemble (so it's not a midi problem or a filepath problem), but I can't get the instruments to play within Sibelius. I followed the instructions very carefully, but Sibelius and VE don't seem to be communicating. (Vienna Ensemble Service IS running, if that matters). In a nutshell: VE works by itself and sounds great; it's available as a sound source within the Sibelius Playback Devices dialog; but when I push play, even when everything seems to be set up correctly to use VE, there is no sound. Thank you very much for your time.

  • This is odd. Could it be that you are trying to use a standalone version of Vienna Ensemble? You will have to use a plugin version. This can be done by activating it in the Sibelius/Playback Devices menu. If this doesn't help, please describe every step you have made and if you can see incoming MIDI signals in Vienna Ensemble.

  • Happily, I've solved the problem--it's working perfectly now. I knew everything was done correctly, but nothing was happening when I pushed play. It felt like the two programs were unaware of each other. I'd had a problem before with not getting any sound from VE as a standalone, and through googling found this solution: Launch Directory Manager; delete everything in it; launch Disc Utility and repair permissions; reboot; drag and drop the VSL sound file folders into Directory Manager; reboot. It worked. So with this latest problem of Sibelius not connecting with VE I tried a similar thing: Clicked on Audio Engine Options, clicked on Rescan; repaired permissions with Disc Utility; rebooted; started Sibelius. It worked immediately. Perhaps the installer isn't showing Sibelius the correct filepaths...or something? Thanks again for your time. Your prompt response to my posts is greatly appreciated.

  • One more minor question: in the Playback Devices dialog you can choose Vienna Ensemble VST or Vienna ensemble AU--is there any difference?

  • The only difference is the plug-in technology, but there's no better or worse.
