  • Mir pro 24 and Cubase 6.5 - can't record

    Hi all,

I've been demoing MIR pro 24 with Notion and actually managed to get it to work. I then thought I might have more control if I tried using a DAW so I've now got the trial version of Cubase 6.5. Try as I might I can't get Cubase to record anything. That is to say it looks like it's recording but when it's finished there's no output.

I start Vienna Ensemble 64 and assign an Instrument first then in Cubase I start a new project and select Vienna Ensemble Pro 64 from the Virtual Instruments menu item. I add a midi track when prompted ( I have tried it without as well).

When I press record I start playing. I can hear the output and the volume display goes up and down in Cubase and the midi track shows that it is recording Vienna Ensemble pro 64.

Then I stop, rewind and press play and there's nothing there.

I'm sure I'm missing something very basic. I've tried consulting the Cubase manuals and looking for videos that might explain it but all to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Duncan

  • It there is no MIDI data recorded, you could be recording from the left locator, and have the locators set the wrong way round.

  •  Hi DG,

Thanks for the tip. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I suspect though that I've just got the basic concept wrong. I'll have to have a closer look at the manuals. Maybe I'm trying to familiarize myself with too many products at the same time : VI, VE (Pro), MIR Pro 24, Notion and Cubase. Apart from Cubase all the others seem to work fairly intuitively - at least as far as basic functionality is concerned.

    Thanks again,

    Duncan

    Duncan,

Yes that is a great many products to demo at once. However if Cubase decides to make nice, or if DG is correct (as he often is) you should be making beautiful music in no time.  [H]

Actually, having though more about this, I don't think I am right in this case.  LOL.

@The OP, when you say that there is no sound, is anything recorded? If you select the MIDI part and do Ctrl-E to open it, are there any notes there? If so, then you have recorded the MIDI, so it is somewhere else down the chain where things are going wrong. It is probably something really simple, but it is hard to diagnose without seeing the project. if there is any way that you post post a short video of everything you've said, it would be easier to see what's going on.

  • Thanks, Mike and DG, very much for your help!

I read DG's first tip on my mobile just before I went to bed and to prepare my test of his theory I took the midi cables out of my digital piano (seemed like a good idea at the time). This evening I tried going through the procedure again but this time following the instructions in the VE Pro Manual for connecting to Cubase as closely as I could. I was still not getting any midi recorded. Then I hit Ctrl-E on my keyboard as DG suggested this evening and I heard some sound! But that was my computer keyboard triggering the input. I then decided to switch the midi cables round - having completely forgotten that I'd unplugged them the night before. Of course, I'd also forgotten which way I'd had them in before but I soon got it to work. So many thanks again for your suggestion. One other thing I did in Cubase was change the setting for the audio drivers - can't find it again now but the default setting wasn't the ASIO driver of my Babyface.

I probably really shouldn't be demoing so many products at the same time. In an ideal world I'd spend a few more years at least learning more about harmony, counterpoint, instrumentation and orchestration but the older I get the more impatient I get. As for making beautiful music, thanks for the encouragement Mike, but I think I'll have to leave that to others. I'll never be anywhere near as good as lots of people on this forum but I do get a lot of pleasure from composing and I may never be very good but I am getting better - so for me it's well worth the effort and the expense as using VSL is the only way I'm ever going to hear what it would actually sound like.

Anyway, thanks again - I'm sure I'll be back with more questions soon[:)]

  • Duncan,

If the journey makes your heart smile, stretch your legs, spread your wings, and conduct your orchestra as you will......   (Maestro)  [:D]

  •  Duncan, IMO you are trying way too many things at one time. There are so many variables that it will be very difficult to pin them where the problem lies. I really suggest that you:

    1. Get Cubase running properly, so that you can record MIDI from your keyboard. As you have pointed out, you have to set the correct ASIO driver in Devices. Whilst you're in that dialogue, make sure that "release driver when Cubase is in the background" is not checked.
    2. Load Vienna Instruments directly in Cubase, to check that it is all working properly.
    3. Then learn to use Vienna Ensemble Pro
    4. Lastly worry about MIR

BTW I always switch off Windows sounds on my studio machines.

  •  Thanks Mike!

  •  Hi DG,

Thanks very much for your feedback. You're absolutely right about trying too many things at once. At present my work flow is based around notation and I'm generally quite pleased with the results I get using Notion SLE with VE Pro/MIR. All these programs seem fairly intuitive to me (at least as far as the basics are concerned) but having gathered from this forum that you really need a sequencer if you want to have more control over the sound I decided to give Cubase a try in the hope that it might also be fairly intuitive. Unfortunately, it's not as easy for me to use as I was hoping, so I think for the time being I'll leave Cubase out of the equation which will give me a bit more time to work on the music rather than getting bogged down with technical difficulties.

I had already switched all my Windows sounds - but that didn't stop my anti-virus software from nearly bursting my eardrums - so I've switched that off as well now (just the sound, that is).

Sorry if it sounds like I'm ignoring your good advice. Sooner or later I'm pretty sure I will end up buying Cubase anyway. I also gather that Elements/Artist won't be enough to get the best out of VSL but maybe they could be used as a starting point?

    Thanks again,

    Duncan
