2nd violins are made by simply using a second section of the 14 violins (or whatever library one decides to use). To avoid phasing when the two violin sections are playing in unison, the 2nd violin part is transposed down 1/2 step (if a full library) or a whole step (if an SE library). The mod wheel/pitch bend is used to bring that sound back up to concert pitch.
In the newest VI Pro 2, VSL provides some 2nd violin articulations for each of the string libraries, with the steps outlined above being done in the background, so the end user does not have to go through that routine (if the end user finds the number of 2nd violin patches to be sufficient).

I take it the 2nd violin articulations in VI Pro 2 that you refer to are not available in the Special Editions? I don't see any.

I've heard about these mystical patches too but have yet to find them. I have Solo Strings and Dimension Strings.
Make sure you have done all the library updates. They were included in those. Dimension Strings however doesn't have them. My Chamber, Solo, Appassionata etc. all do. Run the updates, and then the folders will appear inside the patches window in VI Player (they will be at the bottom of the patch list).
