  • 1st violins 2nd violins

    Hi.

I am seeing demo, such as harp 1 , and in the arrangement, it says violins 1, violins 2, Actually i saw that several times,

What does that mean, Chambers, as violins 1 and orchestral as violins 2 ?

  • In one of the recent updates, VSL created some 2nd violin patches, using the standard techniques within the VSL world (in essence doing the work for us).

Just in case you don't know the method (not clear from you comment): The standard method to create 2nd violins within VSL is to transpose the track (when completed) down 1/2 step (or up) and then use the mod wheel to raise the pitch back up 1/2 step to sound at correct concert pitch.  Doing this allows different samples to be used in the 2nd violins, and eliminates any problem with phasing when the two sections happen to play in unison.

The VSL string libraries do not offer true 2nd violin sections with separate samples from the 1st violins.  The desire to have true 2nd violins has been mentioned from time to time over the years, but that is not going to happen.  One advantage to VSL's approach is there are no intonation discrepancies between the two sections.  A second one is that RAM requirements are less as well.

  • Hi, Noldar12,

I did the update for my orchestral strings, and cant seem to find what you mention,

    Are they labled  ?

    Where are they ?

    thank you

  • In my libraries, they are at the very bottom of the patch lists.  Also, be sure you do the actual updates in your user area, or they won't appear.  They were made in the update, but you got to load the updates first.  Then you should see them near the very bottom of the patch lists in it's own section called violins 2.

  • Ah :) I do see them

How are there different than the other articuation , In addition there are no performance interval for the them ?

Can you please shed a light on how they different ,

Am I correct if i would use Violins 2 to layer a octave above violin 1 playing in unison ?

    Thank you .

  • The 2nd violins have a subset of the violin articulations, but not all of them.

From your questions, I would strongly suggest getting a good book on orchestration.  Doing so would help you to learn many different scoring techniques, and especially how the various parts work within the string sections of an orchestra (your comment btw is correct).  There is simply no substitute for a serious study of orchestration.

  • While we're on the subject of making a second section from the same samples, how far can one instance of VI get toward achieving this? I'm able to load two sections into one cell of the matrix, and I'm able to transpose one instrument a half step. However I am not able to then use the pitch wheel to take only one of those two instruments back to the starting pitch. The pitch wheel seems to only affect both instruments. Can I use "master tuning" or anything like that to retune the one instrument to match the other, or do I just need to load two instances of VI? (I'd prefer not to for the sake of organization.)

  • You will likely want to treat the 2nd violins in its own instance, since they form their own section apart from the 1st violins.  You also could then do some slight EQ adjustments to differentiate the sound a bit from the 1st violins.

  • I do understand the advantages of doing it as a separate instance, however VI has a filter and some panning, and for most of my purposes that's all that I need to get the sound I'm going for. In future updates it would be helpful to make this process a little bit simpler--for example allowing individual master tuning or individual pitch wheel control within one instance. I'm not necessarily looking to replicate a second violins section, but I'm looking for flexibility of ensemble sizes across the board.
