  • Bow change idea

I think it would really cool to have control of the bow direction, up, or  down while the note is heald down, usining key switch

so say you playing a phraze with several note, it would cool to play the note and use key switch to change the bow direction while thise note are played, and some time while one not is held the bow direction can be changed by two speperate key switch , one for up , on for down

    Hello

I don't say that bow changing would be cool. But I maintain: By chosing "correct" samples or restarting legato-samples you can simulate the change of the bow direction probably more audible than with real up and down bow samples.

When I listen to a lot of pieces (produced with sampled strings) I can often make out endles legatos.

This isn't possible. Even if we have no ups and downs the easyiest way to simulate a change of the bow direction is to interrupt the legato line and to restart the legato again.

Have a look here and listen to the example: http://www.beat-kaufmann.com/vitutorials/vi-tips--tricks-3/index.php (No 26.)

Another example: If you are going to chose a lot of different samples (as the real violin player would it do as well) you soon will forget the missing Ups and Downs - just because it sounds correct - also without the up and dwon bow possibility.

    Listen once more: http://www.beat-kaufmann.com/vitutorials/vi-tips--tricks-3/index.php (No21.)

Here are two more examples (played without up and down bow [;)]

Do you need up and down bows here? Example 1 or here? Example 2

    All the best

  • I would say the job of a player of any string instrument is to make up and down bows indistinguishable except when pronounced down bows are used for accents.  Also, in an orchestra, it is impossible to tell whether something is up or down.  So if you simply have alternating bows, whether up or down, it is the same.

In general the conception of the bowing of a piece is a major part of any performance of string music, and is often penciled in, in advance, on the parts in agreement among the players and concertmaster, modified by the conductor.  However, with samples, people are far too casual about this and should think about exactly how a passage would actually be played (at least if they want realism).
