  • Whitch slave computer to choose?

    Hello,

I currently work on an album made entirely with sound banks. And not just any: Brodaway BigBand (100GB 24bit samples, Key switch & co.), VSL, Native instrument, Spectrasonics and Vir2 Mojo, among others.I use a template with as many tracks as instruments. 7 trumpets, 5 saxes, 4 clarinets, five trombones, bass beats, piano, keyboards, percussion, e. keybords, woodwinds and strings. All these people is managed by kontakt, EV (not pro) via multis instruments.

    My problem:

if I want to work in buffer 128, see below, artifacts shall attend, logic pro 9 is slow, latency, error while reading samples. Not at first but when the midi parts become numerous. So I will switch to 258 or 512 and it is boring and I lose too much time to edit. On my activity monitor, os app, Logic pro 9 use about 187% when reading midi a lot of parts?? CPU overload in red in logic. When i increase buffer size, problem is reduce but i have latency when i play my midi keyboard.

    My questions:

Is that the slave computer is the solution? If yes, should i choose a PC? a mac? How much RAM? SSD? Raid? And whitch processor? I will, if all goes well, have a budget for it. I am really tired of wasting time on the machines.

    My current config:

    Mac Pro 8-core XEON 2008 5400
    28Go RAM MacWay
OS 10.7, Logic Pro 9 on 250GB SSD.
    UAD2 card in PCIe
    2 Barracuda 7200 2to
    Sound card RME FF800

. All your opinions are welcome.

  • I too prefer Macs, but when it comes to slaves, you can't beat the bang for your buck in the PC world. You can get a SATA 3 ready, Windows 7, intel Core i7 machine capable of running SATA 3 SSD's for about $1000. I've spent more than that maxing out the Ram on a single Mac... Speaking of Ram, DDR3 PC Ram is dirt cheap. 24gigs minimum but you may be able to get away with 16gigs on a slave. (maybe) However, besides VSL, how much of this can you offload on a PC? Hopefully you have PC versions of all your software. P/S: If there is a sizable budget, by all means, buy another Mac.

  • If Logic report samples not read in time, you can solve this by putting your libs on a Sata III SSD on a Sata III card or to put your lib on a Raid 0

  • Ballagnat,

Did you end up getting a slave or SSD's or what?
