  • performance Portamento

Using Orchestral Strings performance patches are great, specially when it comes to fast passages.

I am trying to creat the behavior of the violins in fast passages when notes are played by sliding from one mote to the other . using protamento patches does not do it,

    Any advice ?

  •  Is there any way that you can post a link to real world example, because portamento is not possible when playing fast. You are obviously hearing something, but I can't imagine what from your description.

  • From my limited understandind, Portamento is a slide, mini gliss,  between notes, much

In Middle eastern music its used alot, to play a phraze with sliding notes and some time at fast tempo.

Am looking for an example to post,

Here is live example, You can hear the fast portamento transitions

  • Portamento in western music is usually slower and more pronounced.   However, the so-called "zigane" legato which you can find in VSL is a characteristically faster legato.  You could also use the "fast legato" patches which are featured throughout the various instruments.  These are about the same in feel as normal legato but with faster attacks.  Another alternative is to layer normal legato with various clear but soft short note attacks such as detache or portato, which are often very effective in getting a very fast line or run of notes that are still connected.

  • Hi, the Zigane is not found in Orchestral Strings, Actually not sure which if the strings library its in, even if its just in one , say chambers, its not in the larger section, so using them would nod do it.

William, I understand your thoughts about western music, But there are many other types of music out there, this is one of the reason why VIpro has the micro tune built in for non western music :)

Aha, that's why i asked, because there is no way I could have guessed that you were talking about Middle Eastern music on a symphonic forum. [;)]

Unfortunately I can't hear your example, because the browser that I'm using is not supported by the Website you linked to. There are various options you can use for Portamento, but without hearing your example I don't really feel that I could give you any accurate advice.

  • not sure why my link does not work :( even if you copy/pate :(

If you google "Turkish strings" and listin to any arrangement, am sure you will hear the style am refering to, its the ability to connect fast notes, almost like the using the pitch bend betwwen notes.

  •  As I said, my browser is not supported.

If I have time I'll do some Googling later.

  • No worries, thank you for your help.

  • Yes, the zigane legato is in Chamber strings.  They can be layered with Orchestral.  For example, one could layer Orchestral fast legato with Chamber zigane and obtain an extremely rapid legato effect.  Also as I mentioned using some detached articulations with legato is a way of speeding up legato.

  • William its not about fast legato, thats not an issue, its the motes sliding between the notes, think of connecting nots via a pitch bend controler, but with reailistic intervalls

  •  O.K., since you said "violins in fast passages" I thought you wanted fast legato. Never mind.

  • William, I really appreicte you effort to help, and thank you so much for doing so,

I do want fast legato , but with portamento conection between the notes :)

  • Hi mazeka,

did you install the library updates for your Orchestra and Appassionata strings?.

Doing so you'll get access of new "performance-legato_fast_slur" patches. Maybe these patches deliver what you are looking for.

    best

    Herb

  • Perhaps you have already tried this, but if not: If you own VI Pro 2, you can create all kinds of different portamentos with all sorts of different speeds by changing the times of the different portions of each sample (the first VI Pro only allowed you to change the speed of the entire sample).

  • Hi Herb, Thanks for the reply,

Yes I did install the updates and tried the new patches, I think what am  looking might not be possible, its more the playing style :) might try to add some pitch bend controller to portamento patches,

I think what am looking for is kinda potamento between sevral notes, in other words,

VSL Portamento is one shot slide betwenn two notes, a starting note and a destination note,

I think its possible for violins player to start a portamento from a starting note, then the slide another and then another without initiating a new portamento ,

so basically the notes are different during a prtamento

Sorry am trying my best to explain what am looking for,

Herb, can you listen to the Strings mp3 in my personal files?

  • Hello DG, my name is Boris I've been viewing the comments on portamento in Vienna, and I'm trying to find the stretch feature in VI pro 2. Thank you in advance Boris
