I just can't seem to get it to work. I'm trying to get the 15 brass parts to work. I get some parts working others don't. I fiddle with the one's not working and get them to work only to find the ones that were working no longer work. I'v tried and I've tried and I've tried. I get close to getting most of them to work but not all. I fiddle with the non-working parts, get them to work only to find yet again a different part that worked before doesn't work now. And so it goes on and on and on until I'm loosing the will to go on (again).

For instance I have four vienna horn parts and a fifth part for stopped horn. Rather than describe the set up here are some screen shots here, here, here, here, here and a short MP3 here. (the MP3 is very bottom "Horn 6")

So the four horn lines are set up identically but only the first horn part plays properly the other parts do not react properly. You can hear the clear difference in the MP3.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong.

Maybe it's to do with not having the most up to date VSL house style. Can you email this to me as the one I constantly download from "needful things" doesn't seem to be the correct one.

  • Hi David!

As written in your other thread, there is no newer version of the House Style available than the one that's in the Needful Things/Sibelius Sound Sets section of the User Area.

In order to trigger the fifth (stopped) horn part, you will have to write "mute" at the beginning of the staff.

I can't see or hear anything going wrong with your other horn parts. They are just lower in volume. Maybe you have turned down MIDI volume in the Sibelius mixer or lower values on the Expression fader.

    Best,
    Andi

  • The fifth (Stopped Horn) part works fine.

All the horn parts have exactly the same volume slider settings in Sibelius and have exactly the same settings in each of their VIs.

That exact same passage, marked fff, triggers C11,127 in the first horn but only C11,70 in the other three.

And the 1st horn reacts correctly to articulation changes but the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Horn do not react to articulation changes.

I have the same rpoblem with the trumpets. Trumpet one works fine but trumpets 2 and 3 do not react to articualtion changes even though they are set up exactly the same as trumpet 1.

  • Unfortunately your screenshots have been replaced, so I can't take a closer look anymore. As suggested in one of your other threads it might help to reset the output devices of all horns and trumpets to (Auto) in the Sibelius mixer. If this doesn't help, I would add the problematic instruments to your score once again and cut and paste the content of the staves.

Also take a look at the Expression slider in VI Pro (Advanced/Perform). Maybe you have different values set there.

  • I am very pleased to report that setting them all to Auto seems to have resolved the problem and they are (for the moment) working correctly. So that's the brass working.Hooray!

I should also have said that this time round I started by setting up the keyboards including the recalcitrent organ, which caused me so many problems before, and it works fine. All my keyboards, tuned percussion, untuned percussion and choir are working OK. And now the brass work OK.

So that just leaves the oboes and the strings to resolve.
