  • ORF Studio 3

    What kind of ensembles was the ORF Studio 3 designed and optimized for ?  I have tried to use this venue on several occasion including a recent composition for Chamber Strings, Harpsichord , Oboe and Bassoon and the sound although accurate in rendering the instruments seems lifeless, almost like a wet blanket was thrown over the whole ensemble. If I perform the same ensemble in the ORF Sendesaal Mic 1 venue the resulting mix has the sparkle characteristic of MIR venues. Is the difference in sound due to the reverb times 1.5 versus .8 or some other phenomena? It would be helpful if some detailed suggestions on optimal use of ensembles in this space could be outlined by the expert engineers.

    quoting the RoomPack 2 Manual, p.6:

    On the map, Studio 2 and 3 are almost identical concerning size, but they couldn't be more different acoustically. [...]

    BTW: Due to their very precise imaging and the short reverb tails, both Venues lend themselves very well to the use of additional algorithmic reverb tails, e.g. MIRacle. The new MIR Pro Venue Presets offer some ideas in that respect.

  • Thanks  Dietz. I can understand why the venue was popular with the big band sound, consider the spikes created by trumpet,trombones and drums that were popular at the time. I will  have to look at the new venues and the MIRacle for some additional possibilities. Compositions that utilize trumpets,  trombones and drums as vertical outbursts might also work well in these venues. Strings seem to die in these venue when used without  addons.

    Hi Stephen,

    could it be that you're confusing ORF Studio 2 and 3?

    Studio 2 is really, really dry - you would use it for "space without reverb", if you get my drift. I've heard people say there "Hey, where did they hide my echoes?!?" 😄 .... A good example is this mix of "In A Sentimental Mood" (one of my all-time favorite VSL demos, BTW).

    Studio 3, OTOH, is nice for all acoustic instruments. It might not be the proper environment for the typical huge romantic string section, that's true, but it's great for any kind of acoustic music that needs lots of air without any "muddiness" or blurring. Chamber music from all eras would be a typical example.

  • The in a Sentimental Mood is a beautifully mixed and rendered classic.  The mix has the classic American Club sound that was common in the 60-70's. I see what you mean about the accuracy of the placement of the instruments, especially the drum part subtle but present. These two venues are challenging but worth exploring.
