  • Vibrato & Legato

Hi all, I own the Special Edition Standard Library (I think it is called Special Edition Volume 1 nowadays). Well, I am right now using the legato performances of the string (ensemble) section extensively and in cooperation with Velocity X-Fade and the possible dynamic adjustment of Attack/Release-Times I achieve a quite satisfying result. BUT, with time and especially in comparison to original recordings it sounds a little too clean and "tidy". I believe the main reason is that there is no vibrato at all around. I would like to add to some note here and there a little vibrato, but still keep with smooth transitions by using legato. How can I achieve that ? Is there any way at all ? Good point: I am talking about the STRING SECTION ! :) Thank you, Paul.

  •  Which Instruments are you talking about?

  • See above, I edited my message.

  • I would have answered, except that as I don't have Special Edition, I have no idea what samples constitute the Strings section. However, I can be sure that they already have vibrato, because the ones that don't are called non-vibrato.

With the full Collections I find that the Orchestral Strings sound a bit anemic, because the vibrato is not full enough for my taste. However, when layered with either Appassianata Strings, which has a big vibrato, or Chamber Strings, with a bit of vib espr patch mixed in, it works very well. How this translates to SE I have no idea.

  • That is a good hint. In the manual of the special editions, vibrato is rarely mentioned. For example, only the orchestral strings are marked as vibrato and within this scope only the mute_sustain patches. I will contact VSL and ask them about the DVD instruments. In such cases, they usually answer quickly. Best regards, Paul.
