  • Pops and glitches despite only using about a 3rd of my available RAM

Don't know if anyone can help. I'm running a 64 bit Vienna Ensemble Pro server on a separate mac via ethernet. I've got 16GB of RAM on that machine but after loading a fairly hefty bunch of Vienna instruments and AU instruments I'm getting lots of crackles and pops (if I start removing instruments the problem goes away). I've checked the activity monitor and it's telling me I'm still only using just under 7GB of my available 16GB of RAM. Are there any other limitations of my MAC I need to take into consideration ? Thanks in advance ...

    1. How many instances?
    2. How many threads per instance?

  • Hi Matt,

    In addition to DG´s questions:

Which Macs are you using, which OS, which sequencer, which software versions?

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • Hi Guys,

    Thanks for helping out.

Well I'm using Protools 8 HD on my main mac and Vienna server on a 2.8GHZ Quad-core intel mac with 16GB of RAM. I was connected over our company network but I've tried changing that to a router in my studio with only the 2 macs connected (using the second ethernet port).

One instance of Vienna , but with quite a few RAM hungry instruments like omnisphere and cinebrass as well as around 8-10 Vienna instruments (so not much), but as I mentioned only using a total of around a 3rd of my 16GB of RAM ?

  • So "Vienna" means 1 instance of VE Pro does it? Or not? How many threads set per instance? You didn't answer this.

where do you see you have only used 16GB ? if it is not using Activity Monitor, I will check this in Activity Monitor !

What is you main Mac ?

Did you check how much cpu is used ?

What disk do you have on your slave ?

Can you run Disk Speed Test with stress = 1 GB  http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/blackmagic-disk-speed-test/id425264550?mt=12

What is the value of the preload buffer in Directory Manager ?

Yes. It isn't the RAM, it's the distribution of the CPU that is going to affect performance. Up to a point, where RAM is too maxed out on OSX where it seems to affect the graphics. Not so much the audio peformance. And you're not there yet.

On my MacPro I use as much of the cores as possible. All 16 unless I have an odd configuration, which with x64 and most things available in that isn't what I'm doing any more. In VEP 5 we can set threads per instance separately in the vi project: Edit>project settings. So when I have a heavier load I give it more threads per.

at a certain point you'll need to increase latency on the DAW end.

You must allow all the threads availlable.

You are forgetting the disks, they are very important !

The traffic will be depending of the size of the pre-load buffer ! smaller the buffer will be greater the traffic will be

If VI does not have time to read a sample in time you will get a pop or a click. Apparently VI 2.2 will have an indicator of such problem

  • Thanks DG and everyone, yes it was the thread issue. Once I changed to 4 threads (instead of 2) it fixed the problem (it's a 4 core mac).

Thanks again !  I suppose I should put more effort into reading manuals next time ..... ;)
