Does Vienna Ensemble work with Finale 2012 ?
Hi, I am using the 30 free trial version of Finale 2012 on a G5 PPC pre-intel Mac, OS 10.5.8, and I am having trouble getting my VSL libraries to sound through Finale. Also, in my usual DAW, which is Digital Performer 7.2.4, I have four instances of Vienna Ensemble (one each for winds, horns, strings, percussion) and I cant see any way to do this in finale ? I have had a look at the resources on this site, but they seem to be for an earlier version, I tried as best I could, but no luck.... thanks....

There are issues with exporting audio, but as far as normal playback, you should have no problems. I'm on PC, so perhaps can't offer the best assistance. Have you posted on the Finale forum?

Hello Gone To Lunch!
You can find Finale Human Playback Preferences for the Special Edition at the following location:
http://www.vsl.co.at/en/68/141/460/1603/1290.htmThese settings work for all Finale versions from 2009 to 2012. Please notice that currently there are no such settings for our other collections.
If this doesn't help, can you please explain in more detail what you have tried and what exactly doesn't work.
Best regards,
Andi

Ok, I have tried everything in the notes in 'Needful Things' But still no sound, I get a signal in the VE mixer window on both the instrument and the master faders, and also in the Finale Mixer, but still no sound. When I press play I get an error message 'Human playback message' "Some instruments are sharing the same MIDI channel which may cause playback problems. This is resolved by changing MIDI channels with the Instrument list" In my VE screen, I have Midi Port = 1 and the first instrument = 1 (I only have one at the moment) I wonder is it something to do with, what is the relationship between Bank number and channel number in the Finale 'Score Manager' window ? Am I correct in thinking that VE MIDI port number= Finale Bank number ? and VE Channel number = Finale Channel number ? or not ? Or since I get the audio signals in my meters, is the problem something else ?

As Finale isn't VST3-compatible, you only have one MIDI port available with Finale. I recommend leaving the MIDI port in VE at Omni. MIDI bank numbers are something different and have no relevance in VE.
If you have an output in VE but don't hear anything, I guess you have some wrong audio output settings in Finale.

Thanks... Presumably If I have only one MIDI port available, does that mean I can have only one instance of VE, and therefore only 16 sounds ?

Finale gives you 8 MIDI ports of 16 channels. Because they call them "Banks" it makes it a little confusing.
Have you tried loading a VI directly, without VE? Do you get sound output when using the included GPO sounds? When trouble shooting it's best to start with the simplest possible configuration.

I'm having the same issue. When I load the instrument player I can get sound, but not ensemble. Did anyone answer this anywhere to see what I can do differently? I see the input making it to the ensemble player but not getting back to finale or the speakers. Thanks!

Hello "Tim"!
In order to help you, I need some more info.
Did you load instruments inside Vienna Ensemble?
Did you load the Special Edition matrices in the instruments?
Did you make channel assignments in Finale and Vienna Ensemble?
Can you see the VU meters in the Vienna Ensemble mixer moving? Please also add some basic information about your set up like OS and Finale version.
Best regards,
Andi

Thanks for the reply. I wish I had something more to give the forum here but I took a fresh go of it this morning and now it's working. (No clue what changed). For future reference if others search the forum. I followed the 4 steps above and nothing worked. I could load a instrument directly to Finale 2011 (Win 7) and it would work, but then I'd only get 8 midi channels. When I loaded ensemble, the midi would get to ensemble (based on the meters moving) but no sound would come out. I tried the ensemble player alone (not as a service) same result. I stepped away for a few hours, came back and tried it in my sequencer (Sonar X1) and it worked, so I tried in finale again and good or bad news .... it worked too. I'll be back if it miraculously stops sometime. Thanks for your help Andi! Dave

You have to start the VE Server before starting Finale. Perhaps this happend without thinking about it if you had Sonar working with it first.
I get stuttering during playback with VE Pro and Fin2011; it's a know issue. Hope you'll have better luck with the base version of VE

I have had all the same probems, Finale 2012 to Vienna Ensmble.
