  • Issues regarding routing VEPRO and Logic

I've recently been delving into creating a much more formal template for working in Logic. However, I'm definitely in the beginning stages of learning it so I've read as much as I can, but I still have a few questions before proceeding so I don' have to start over (which I've done several times already trying things on my own). I'm hoping someone can clarify these murky areas for me…

My setup is the common one host/one slave setup. I'm running Logic on my Mac Pro and ALL my libraries on a PC with 24gig of RAM. Obviously using VEPRO 5 to link the two.

After quite a bit of frustration trying to get multi-timbral Kontakt instances working, I think I have that down. I'm using the multiport layer format through the Logic environment. In VEPRO, I have my MIDI ports set up with the channel set to OMNI. I have the channels set individually in Kontakt, each with their own pair of outputs. These outputs correspond to a pair of outputs in the Vienna mixer. These outputs are represented by an AUX track in Logic so I have greater control there.

    So my questions are these:

    1) If my basic setup is correct, how are people with large templates bussing? Through Logic? Through VEPRO? I know that bussing in Logic can cause the dreaded 1 core overload problem. But, I've noticed that when trying to bus through VEPRO I'm getting what sounds like almost double tracking. In the VEPRO mixer, I have the Kontakt output being sent to a bus by using the SENDS. The bus is set to OUT1/OUT2 which means I'm seeing it in OUT1/OUT2 in Logic as well as the AUX (which is set to the outputs for the channel in Kontakt). I'm certain this can't be right, but I'm curious as to the proper way to do it.

    2) I'm curious if I'm correct about the number out audio outs I need to set in the VEPRO preferences. As I understand it, 1 MIDI pot = 16 Channels = 32 stereo audio outs. So, if I wanted to use ALL 16 MIDI ports, does that mean I would have to set 512 audio outs so I could assign each Kontakt instance's channel a unique output?

    3) The VSL/Logic multiport environment solution seems to be the best option for me (I think). But I know I'm going to need more than just those ports. I have VEPRO setup for 32 MIDI ports which should be enough. But in order to see more than 16 ports in Logic, do I need to add another software instrument and attach that multiport layer to it again? Basically, copying what I did to get the original 16 ports? Or do I create a whole new VEPRO instance and repeat the whole process?

Sorry, these questions are probably obvious an perhaps I'm just thinking too hard about this. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

No, you actually have a choice.

you can have 512 midi channels and a single stereo audio out in fact. It's a matter of assigning it.

  • Yes I think I understand that but this would limit busing options correct? You can't send midi tracks to a bus so you would need those aux channels with individual outs to do that right?
