  • String artificial harmonics

I'm using Special Edition chamber violins. I'm trying to get artificial harmonics to playback correctly. The convention is to write the ordinary note with a hollow diamond note a fourth above and it sounds two octaves above the oridnary note. With the artificial harmonics patch if I write an ordinary C5 in sibelius the sounding harmonic played by VSL is only an ocatve higher. Am going mad. Why is that?

If I'm right, to get correct playback I have to remove all the diamond notes and transpose it up an octave.

  • Hello David!

The harmioncs have been mapped this way (one octave higher) originally. I agree that this is impractical for the notation of harmonics with a diamond note on the fourth. If you want to use this kind of notation I recommend doing it the following way:
    - Go to the Control Edit/Edit Cell menu of the cell(s) where harmonics are loaded (in VI Pro that menu is called Advanced/Edit).
    - Set Oct. to 1
    - In Sibelius edit the diamond notehead so that it doesn't play back

    Best regards,
    Andi

    Hi Andi,

Everything was going smoothly until I have come up against a weird problem with the chamber basses artificial harmonics.

This JPG is the score. Three beats of pizz then a dotted minim artifical harmonic which should sound concert pitch Db5.

I am using the special edition sound set and have added in the chamber basses artificial harmonics patch which I trigger with the relevant key switch.

This JPG shows the set up in the VI.

The notation is triggering the right patch and it appears to be the right pitch but I am getting this weird repeated note. If you go to this link you can listen to a 5 second mp3 at the bottom of the page Dbass3.

Any ideas on what's causing it and how I can make it playback properly?

  • Hi David!

I'm not sure what's causing this. Anyway, instead of enhancing the Special Edition with Chamber Strings articulations I recommend using the "VE Strings" sound set and the chamber strings VI presets for Sibelius in the first place. The harmonics articulations are included there and you don't have to insert key switches like in your example.

If you don't want to use the "VE Strings" sound set, you can try to insert a "natural" or "ord." command before the keyswitch. Maybe this helps.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  •  I can't use the full chamber strings preset as I've already maxed out my PC with 92 instruments using the special edition soundsets. I'm sure i tried the Ord. option. hey ho! this is the only double bass harmonic in the piece and it's swamped in the texture anyway.

    Thanks for your time.

    David
