    Sometimes when Im adjusting the number of threads per instance in the VEP Preferences, VEP will stop making sound. I'll then try disconnecting using the server interface in Cubase and then cubase crashes. If i try restarting the engine in VEP, VEP will crash. Just FYI.

    you should not expect to do that [manage preferences] during playback.  if you tried to manage for instance 'device setup' in Cubase during playback it will stop playback.  

    You don't need to disconnect to change threads per instance. Some things you will be required to restart VEP in order to effect the change. Number of ports or audio outs for instance. Or adding a controller to what VEP sees.
