Vienna Instruments Pro
Hi everyone, I've been using Digital Performer + Vienna Special Edition for a couple of years and I'm now using Logic, too. Usually, I would open Vienna Ensamble, open some Vienna Instruments inside it and then send all those Inst. to DP. A couple of days ago I purchased the Vienna Instruments Pro. Here's my question: can I use V I Pro inside Vienna Ensamble (not pro)? Which is the best way to work for you? Other question: I never needed fast repetition until now. Now I do. :) Do I have to buy that kind of articulation or can I achieve it inside VI Pro with staccato? Thank you very much, Tommaso www.tommyermolli.net

1. You can use VI PRO inside the free VE Ensemble. I use MIR PRO, that's the best way to work for me.
2. Yes you can create your own using VI PRO, especially if you wanted to setup a sequencer pattern in VI PRO. However you will not get a sound that is as authentic as the true patches which were recorded in that fashion.

Thanks maestro2be. I'm afraid I need some more in-depth answers. 1 - When I add a new instrument in VE, a regular VI is created. How do I convert in a VI Pro one (or how do I create one VI pro directly)? 2 - Could you be a little more specific on how to create repetitions? And what about those true patches? Are they available for purchase like a software instrument? Thanks again for taking time to answer me earlier :-) Tommy

1. It sounds like you haven't properly installed VI PRO possibly. Make sure you are updated with the latest version of the free VE Ensemble and the elicensor software. Once you are sure of that, then install VI PRO. If you don't install VI PRO after VE Ensemble, you most likely will not ever see VI PRO appear in VE Ensemble. So first step, re-install Update VE Ensemble, eLicensor and then VI PRO. After you install them all, Launch the "stand alone" version of VE Ensemble and it should scan and find the new install of VI PRO. After you have done that read the next paragraph.
Open the manual (download it from your user area if you need to), look at page 12 and 13. There is a little picture of the icon tray you will see inside VE Ensemble (bottom left corner). It shows the possible types of plug-ins you can insert. You can see in the picture there is a VI that is WHITE on the far left, and then right beside that is a BROWN VI. The white one is VI PRO, brown is regular VI.
Converting should be under the file menu and say "convert project to VI PRO".
2. There are a few ways to create a repitition. The most standard way of course is to draw in or play in your notes live in your daw for that passage using say a stacatto patch (you can alternate with that and short detache and other fast patches to create a realistic sound). Option two is to create your own patterns using VI PRO 2 sequencer. You can see how to do this in the VI PRO manual on page 28. The third option is to actually purchase the extended version of the library so that you have true repition patches.
You can create extremely realistic repitition patches yourself using options 1 and 2 but it will take a slight learning curve and time to build your own patterns. I will say, that I still find it faster to create my own, than to sometimes use the patches because they are very static. They sound very real, but they are set tempo. You can modify the repitition speed for the entire patch by stretching or reducing in VI PRO. The video and manual both teach you how to adjust the time of a sample.
Did you buy the DVD version, or the download version of Special Edition? Here is the link to the download version of just the Special Edition Strings. Please contact sales before you buy anything though, because you may already own the standard part of those and it might make you buy them again before it lets you buy the extended (I say that because I own all of the samples on DVD and it's telling me to get the download strings, I have to buy the standard before I can buy the extended). All you want are the extended patches of the strings. Contact sales@vsl.co.at if you are interested in purchasing those to be sure you get what you need.

I put in my details :-) I installed VI pro before installing VE, so that's probably it. Thanks again! I'll let you know the end. Tommy

Yes, I uninstalled VI Pro and re-installed it. Now it works inside VE. I'll now dive into repetitions. :) Thanks again, Tommaso
