    We are working with Digital Performer on a MacPro 8-core, 2TB, using VSL libraries (Cube) and VEPro5 and VIPro2. I have opened old Performer midi files in the new DP. Most of the previous instrument sounds were from a JV1080. Our task is to use VSL sounds, get a good mix, and get the music out there. I've created 4 VSL instances, one for each instrument group (brass, woodwinds, strings, percussion). I did this so they could stay loaded and I could change songs and not have to reload instruments each time. For each "song" I open in DP, from the old midi files, I instantiate each of the 4 VSL instances and assign appropriate instruments to the appropriate tracks. Then I work on adding articulations, etc. THE PROBLEM is that I am getting spits and sputters every time I start playback. I have already changed the DP buffer setting to 1024. I have also set the number of threads per instance in VSL to 2 (which I believe is right....8 cores, 4 instances, s/b 2 threads per instance, from the manual) What am I doing wrong that is causing this noise at the beginning of playback? AND, I have NO IDEA what is realistic to expect; with my 4 instances of VEPro open, I have loaded 49763 samples. Is that crazy? What IS realistic? THANK YOU SO MUCH! Support is always very helpful!

    What is your CPU and RAM usage?

    I hope I can answer that correctly. I checked the "activity monitor" on the Mac and it indicated that the percentage of CPU that is "idle" ranged from about 85% (when running DP and the 4 VEPro instances) to 89% when it's not in playback mode. In that same window, where the %CPU/Threads/Real Mem are listed for each process, VEPro showed between 108%CPU when resting to 158%CPU during playback, while DP was only 4.5% - 30%. Number of threads for VEPro was @134, for DP @42. Real Memory 5.61GB for VEPro, 197MB for DP. The CPU indicator on the lower right of the VEPro windows ranges from approx. 4-7% during playback. Disk Usage indicates 185GB for space utilized; 813GB space free. System memory shows: Wired 4.31GB, Active 2.45GB, Inactive 1.22GB, used 7.97GB, Free 13. MB...constantly changing. VM size 187.19GB Is that the information you wanted? I'm sorry...I don't know what it all means so I sent you all I could find!     I hope I can answer that correctly.

    Step 1 for Digital Performer and VSL is...

    Go to DP's preferences

    Select the Audio Plug-ins preferences from the list on the left

    Choose "Virtual Instruments in Real-time" from both of the bottom pop-up menus on the lower right, under "Plug-in real-time preference:"

    Click "Done" in the bottom right.

    Then, dare I say, voila? If that setting is not right, all you'll get is nasty sputtering noise on every VI except any that happen to be record-enabled.

    Happy to help! I had my own very rough 24 hours a little over a year ago when I switched from Sonar to DP and have seen a few people with the same problem on here, so always know what it is and leap to the rescue. :)
