  • EXS through MIR on an 8-core Mac

I have a several EXS instruments piping through a Vienna Ensemble pro Input Insert, with the required, bypassed I/O insert for each channel strip and the Vienna Ensemble Pro to which the EXS' are sent.

To get playback (which is latent by about a second), I must physically move the mod wheel. Embedded CC#1 information doesn't work. I hit play, hear nothing, move the mod wheel, and then the track plays.

Frustrating. It's a glorious sound. It's the best sound I've ever had with a sampled orchestra. Any ideas why the mod wheel has to be moved to get a playback? Thanks.

  • I can't reproduce your setup ATM, but I already asked our development team to look into your issue. Thanks for your patience!

  • hi Dietz

did you look to my EXS problem too ?

  • Hi Dietz,

I opened a brand new Logic song.

Channel Strip 1 (Inst 1) is an EXS with an extremely small RAM. Insert 1 is a Vienna Ensemble Audio Input assigned to the only VEP instance in the song. Insert 2 is a bypassed I/O plug-in. The I/O (Instrument) is EXS, of course, and there is no output.

Channel Strip 2 (Inst 2) is the Vienna Ensemble Pro instance. Insert 1 is a bypassed I/O plug-in. The channel strip is set to "Stereo Out." The VE instance has just the one Audio Input track (no loaded patches).

I can't replicate the "move the mod wheel to make it play" phenomenon. But I do have two issues which may be akin to the previous issue.

    1. Garbled playback. There's that crackling, break-up sound. This is only on playing back a sequence. It never happens live. However....

    2. Loss of live playback.  When I play the keyboard (usually after I start and stop the sequence), I lose the audio. I have to click on and off each track to coax it back on line. Once it comes back, it sounds normal. (Through MIR, it sounds great, actually.)

I also get that little blurb of sound when I click on the track with the VEP. You know, like some remaining sound of what you just played.

This test seems to rule out operator error and the more elaborate environment in my previous problem. Of course, it does not rule out the limits of my computer (8-core 2.8 running 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard), Logic 9.1.5 -- one version back from the current Logic -- 18 GB). But the CPU tax with this elementary file is so small it barely registers on the meter. Also, I have no sound card -- just the audio out on the Mac itself.

I've even turned off Virtual Memory in EXS (so all the samples are loaded in RAM and there is no streaming).

The MIR is still the demo (I bought the license but haven't loaded it yet). It's the Mozartsaal.

I've duplicated the problem when I assign EXS' Audio Input to a networked Mac Mini (Lion). So it doesn't seem to be a localhost issue.

    Thanks for any input.

  • Hi all,

just to let you know: The problems reported are already looked at by VSL's software engineers. Sorry for the inconvenience.

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks. Do you if they were able to reproduce the problem?

  • Sorry, I don't know any more details ATM.

    Thanks for your patience!

  • I revisited the issue tonight with no improvement. The failure was a bit more obvious and reproducible.

SCENARIO 1: EXS to VE PRO Instance with Other Loaded VSL Instruments

I have an EXS channel strip with Inserted Vienna Ensemble Pro Audio Input and a bypassed I/0.  It is received by a VE Pro Instance Audio Input channel.

Works. Sounds great. But when I hit play, the EXS signal is lost.

TO REGAIN SIGNAL, I just play something, anything, on the receiving VE PRO instance. Then I go back to the EXS instrument and it plays again.

Until I hit play in Logic again. Rinse, repeat.

Here's one diagnostic detail. If I play a different VE PRO Instance, one that has nothing to do the EXS / VE Pro link noted above, EXS playback does not return. I have to select the receiving VE PRO instance that has EXS' channel input, play something, and then return to the EXS.

Sometimes instead of losing the signal, the EXS delays playback. But that has never lasted for long. It's the beginning of the end.

I also tried outputing the entire EXS signal to a bus, then insterting the VE Pro Audio Input in the bus. No difference.

SCENARIO 2: EXS to VE PRO Instance with Nothing but a Channel Input

Identical, except instead of a loss of EXS audio, I get garbled audio, again after I hit play. And eventually even that is lost.

There are no loaded instruments in the VE PRO in this case. But just assigning the software instrument to an Arrange track and selecting it, then re-selecting the EXS track returns the audio.

This is curious, because if I just select and do not play the loaded VE PRO instance in the first scenario, that is not enough to coax back an EXS signal.

  • I can't seem to reproduce this here. Are you sure you have the I/O Utility plugin properly activated on both the VE Pro and VE Pro Audio Input tracks in Logic?

  • Thanks Karel for your efforts.

Stick a big SOLVED on this one. I had instantiated the I/O Plug-In and bypassed it numerous times.... But I never enabled the I/O Output's OUTPUT.  I realized my error after watching Paul's video on MIR (at 5:52).

Indignantly I returned to the tutorial in the manual, certain that it was not there. Alas, it was, with that little red box on page 35 of version 2.2.

What confused me was the fact that the EXS Instrument DOES play through MIR without the I/O's Output enabled if you're just tapping the keyboard, right after it's all connected. The trouble comes later, after playback has been launched.

    Regards.

  • Without Logic's Live mode (which is achieved by the I/O Utility plugin workaround) things indeed do work to some extent, but definitely not enough for a productive workflow (as you experienced first hand).

    Hello Karel

When in the I/O plug-in you attach it to an output, do you attach it to any output ? or do you attach the 1st I/O to the 1st output, the second I/O to the second output ........

    Best

  • As long as an output is assigned in the I/O Utility plugin, doesn't matter which one, since it gets bypassed anyway. It's just a workaround to force the Logic track into Live mode.

  • Hello Karel,

    Thanks for your answer.

This morning I have experiment the EXS.

Logic is on my 8 core Mac and has about 24 x midi tracks and 3 x EXS , VE + Mir are on my 12 core Mac

The 2 Mac are liked directly thru there 2nd Ehternet port

I have 97 x VI and 3 inputs in my VE, all the VI are in stereo

I have put a bypassed I/O on each VSL input and on each of the 8 x VSL Event input instruments ;  I have set each I/O with the only out that there is on the 8 core Mac

I have also put an bypassed I/O to the VSL AU that returns the sound to Logic

All the VI are playing OK, sometimes I get some sound on the inputs after I have press stop.

Do you have any Idea what I have done wrong ?

    Thanks in advance

    Best

    Cyril
