  • Sibelius with more than 16 channels

Hello out there! By far the most interesting feature that made me move to VE PRO 5 was the fact that I could finally have all the instruments I need in one VEP 5 Instance in Sibelius. Now it clearly says in the manual that "it is now possible to have all loaded instruments in one Vienna Ensemble Pro instance", but I have to say I'm not very good with computers. After reading page 16 and 43 I am nowhere closer to achieving a result.

Would someone be kind enough to give me a step by step procedure on how to connect the VEP Event input to achieve the multiple port situation in Sibelius?

    Much obliged!

    C.

  •  I don't have step-by-step instructions  but I found the manual was not clear  that you would need to activate the Vienna Ensemble Pro VST plugin in your Sibelius' Playback Devices for Event Input VST to work.  You don't need to select a soundset for this Vienna Ensemble Pro VST plugin.  With the Vienna Ensemble Pro VST you then connect to an VE5 Pro instance and then you can assign the MIDI input in the Event Input VST plugin.   I'm very glad that VSL provide this elegant work around so that we now have the option to keep all the instruments together in one VE5 Pro instance (and the same MIR room.)

  • Hello EP, thank you for your reply. I am as confused as I was before. What do you mean by Vienna Ensemble Pro VST? Do you mean just a normal instance of VEP 5? And if so, are you saying that in playback devices I should activate both the VEP and the VEP Event Input? Or is the VEP just a standalone instance?

And of course this leads me to the next question: (if the above is correct) how do I then route things? Do I tell Sibelius to send the instruments through the VEP Event Input and the VEP to receive from the latter?

Oof! I'm probably making it sound more complicated than it is, sorry if that's the case.

  • Hello C.!

It's not necessary to use a standalone version of VEP.
Please find instructions how to set up the Vienna Ensemble Event Input with Sibelius in the VEP manual, page 43. This manual can be downloaded here:

  • Hello Andi, thank you very much for your reply. But as I said at the beginning of this post, I have read the manual several times... I just don't get it. I understand how to activate both the VEP instance and the VEP Event Input in Sibelius. What I don't understand is how to route everything. For example:

1.- Do I tell Sibelius to send the instruments to VEP Event Input? i.e. Do I need a different instance of VEP Event Input for every section (assuming 16 instruments per section)? So then for example I have to say all woodwinds go to VEP Event input 1?

2.- How does the VEP get the signal from the Event Input? Does this just occur automatically by assigning the equivalent MIDI port?  i.e. VEP Event input MIDI input 1 = VEP MIDI port 1)

I'm sorry if I'm being thick here, but sometimes I just don't understand computers and I guess I get blocked. I still mostly work on paper...

    Thanks!

    C.

  • Hello C.!

For the Special Edition PLUS it's not necessary to have an extra instance for all your instrument groups as they all use the same sound set. If you have more than 16 instruments activate a VEP instance and a VEP Event Input instance. If you have more than 32 instruments, create 2 VEP event inputs. The MIDI port number has to be set in the VEP Event Input window and in the main instance of VEP. Don't forget to set channels and programs on the Sibelius Playback Devices/Manual Sound Sets page for all activated devices (VEP and VEP Event Inputs).

I hope this answers your questions.

    Best,
    Andi
