Is there ANY way to mitigate the huge cost of these libraries?
Can I try them somewhere? are there student discounts? are there competitions to win them? Anything... Thanks, Pat

There used to be something called an Exploration kit (or something similar) which gave you time limited licences for all VSL sample products. I don't know whether or not they still exist though. If you can't find them on this site, it might be worth sending an email to sales@vsl.co.at

IIRC, the exploration kits were available through Best Services. Typically, student discounts are offered about once or twice a year, but at least usually before school starts back up in the fall.
Overall, the best general sales take place during the holiday season.
While not as good as the full DVD collections, when funds are very tight, and computer resources very limited, the Special Edition collections can be of great use. They are a very good entry point into VSL. The drawback is that later one, you will likely want to replace them with the full collections (though owners of SE do get discounts towards the extended libraries of the DVD collections).
Another option - and the one many of us have to take - is to start with one key library, and build a collection slowly, over time. Where to start depends on writing styles/compositional goals. Thinking long-term, especially if you could buy a full library every six months to a year, this might be the best option.
In summary though, if you could only afford one library and would not be able to make additional purchases for a couple/few years, SE standard provides the key orchestral instruments/sections, and would at least allow you to get started in the world of VSL.

I'd like to add that our Winter Offer which expires end of January is described in detail here.
You can, e.g., utilize the Winter Offer to get the Special Edition Bundle Full Library (which is all four parts of the Special Editions, our entry level product line) for only USD 1,160 instead of the regular price of USD 1,635 (which already includes USD 120 bundle discount). That's a total discount of USD 595!
In Euro, that's EUR 965 instead of the regular price of EUR 1,360 (includes EUR 100 bundle discount) - savings of EUR 495!
Here's a list of all instruments and articulations you'd then have.
To get that price, simply purchase the Special Edition Bundle Standard Library first, register it, then order the Special Edition PLUS Extended Library, and write a short email to
saying that you'd like to get the Extended Library of the "regular" Special Edition for free.
You can always contact our sales team at
if you've got any further questions.
Best,
Stefan

you start with SE and when you have a little bit more money you upgrade to SE PLUS then you can upgrade instruments one by one
There is one or twice a year special offers at VSL and at BEST SERVICE that are helping too
i.e. I just bought MIR PRO with 100 euro discout at Best service, then I bought Solo strings with again 30 euro at Best-service that gave me solo strings extended a 0 euro thru VSL with XMAS offer.
*I got 62 euro discount because I have SE PLUS
I Bought for 795 +325 +365 = 1485 euro
Discount = 100 + 30 + 303 + 62* = 495 euro --> 33.11 %
I pay = 990 euro

Hi, Stefan, I read your post, but when I try to purchase Special Edition Bundle ($840), and the Extended Library for Plus Edition ($465), the total amount would be $1305. How can I get the discount price of USD 1160 ? Besides, will VSL charge shipping fees for international shipping in this case ? Please reply. Thanks.

Hi Ondine,
The US-$ prices you mentioned are not correct, I just checked them. Where did you get these prices from?
The Special Edition Bundle Standard Library costs $745, and the Special Edition PLUS Extended Library costs $415, adding up to a total of $1,160...
To get this price, please order the Special Edition Bundle Standard Library in a first step. After you received and registered it, purchase the Special Edition PLUS Extended Libraryand register it. Lastly write an email to
and we'll unlock the Special Edition Extended Library (value $475) for you.
Best,
Stefan

The price on the main page still shows the wrong price. But I use the browser on Mac to see the US currency on another link. However, the problem is that it is approaching the end of January. Even if I order Special Edition Bundle Standard Library, it will take at least one week to receive the DVDs. Then when I can purchase special edition plus extended library, it is already past the deadline. There seems to be no way to get the discount at this time now. sigh~

Hello ondine,
The prices Stefan mentioned are correct. Please erase the cache in your browser or maybe use a different browser.
Our website is definitely up to date.
As you are ordering from Taiwan, please contact our sales team at
and we´ll find a solution.
Regarding the discount: You should order the Solo Strings AFTER you have registered the Special Edition, as there is only an upgrade discount (the other way around would be a "downgrade" and you will not receive a discount).
Best,
Paul

In case you miss my previous email, I just sent the receipt again for requesting free Extended Library of Special Edition Standard. I place my order on January 30, but Audiomidi (www.audiomidi.com) postpone the shipping for some reason. Therefore, you will see the Order dated January 30, but the Invoice dated Feb 23. I have contacted both Audiomidi and VSL sales before I place my order. They both said I am qualified for the free library as long as I place my order before the end of January, so I made the purchase. Since the "invoice" from AudioMIDI only show the shipping date, but they did send me an Email Receipt. There is also a scanned copy of order. Both the receipt and order are dated on January 30. I hope this won't confuse you. I have not yet got any response from VSL after I sent all these attachments in previous mail. Please do let me know what is going on right now. Thank you so much.
