  • Raspy staccato

    Hi

    I find the string staccatos (especially the cellos) rather too raspy and edgy for my tastes. Is there anything that I can do to take the edge of the sound?

    What frequencies should I be looking to blitz here? (BTW, a forte staccato is only raspy when it's played that way, or the mike is too close... [:)]

  • I second that, I am a cellist and can tell you that it staccato does not have to be raspy.

  • so if it doesnt have to be raspy, could you tell me the difference it would be between piano and forte layer ? The difference between these layers, for me, is that forte is much raspy and egy than the piano layer.

    I think that we're talking at cross purposes here. I agree that the forte layer is much more raspy, but all I was saying was that in the real world it doesn't have to be [:)]

    However, I've followed your suggestion and played with the EQ a bit and it seems to have improved the sound. I think that I'll have to wait for my engineer to get here later this month in order to get the best result I can, as I don't really know what I'm doing (and as Dietz always says, you get what you pay for...).

    I think that another of my problems is that I am playing the staccatos too short which leaves the edge and hardly any note left. Maybe when I've found the best patch to use then this will improve again.

    Well I seem to remember you giving advice on how to get a great sounding mix, and the gist of it was "get a great engineer" (which I wholeheartedly subscribe to).

  • You seem to refer to a maybe too sarcastic answer I gave to the question "How was the 'Airforce One'-Demo produced?" In this context I wrote that all ingredients were superior (including Mal Luker, the engineer), so the whole thing simply _had_ to sound great ;-]

    OTOH, there are quite a few examples of people with significantly less engineering-skills, achieving great results nontheless.

    No, I don't think that it was too sarcastic at all; just accurate. In the same way that some people have the skills to be good composers there are also very talented engineers out there.. [:)]
