At the moment, I have devised a system for working with Vienna Ensemble Pro, Finale (2010) and Logic Studio. My basic process is to use Finale as a compostional medium that uses VE Pro as a sample player. When the piece is complete, I make MIDI file of it and transfer it to Logic to create a performance. Ostensibly this could all be carried out on my dual-quad 2.9.3 Mac Pro. However, if one attempts to do so, it quickly becomes evident that Finale 2010 (201x, 201y) is plagued with ancient code (32 bit, not multi-processor aware, etc.) that, among many things, makes it a processor hog that can cause processor overload when running alongside VE Pro on my MacPro (while playing even a relatively simple file).
To overcome this I undertook the following countermeasures:
1. Using a DLink Gigabit Ethernet switch I created a network in which each computer (my core 2 duo MacBook Pro and my Mac Pro has a manually assigned ip address. (Nothing of what follows will work without manually assigned ip addresses.) Turned on screen sharing on both machines.
2. I downloaded ipMIDI from nerds.de/en/ipmidi.html (a free download) and installed it in Audio MIDI Setup thus enabling MIDI over ethernet. This obviated the need to use a hardware MIDI interface for the Mac Pro.
3. I launch VE Pro as standalone on the Mac Pro.
4. I'm thus able to play VE PRO on the Mac Pro as if I were playing an external hardware synth. The result is that there is no interaction between Finale and VE Pro beyond controlling VE Pro's output with Finale's MIDI output - - so there are no overloads, digital artifacts etc. Also, because I am using VE Pro as a standalone on the Mac Pro, the MacBook Pro does not require an audio output interface - - the output goes directly ro the MOTU 2408 installed in the Mac Pro.
When I'm ready to create a performance, I no longer need to use the MacBook Pro and can create the performance using Logic running alongside VE Pro on the Mac Pro.
My question; would it be possible to run a similar setup with MIR Pro? I would be most grateful for a response, Thanks.
