  • Sibelius 7 - Epic - VEpro5

Hi,  I'm using Sibelius 7 and I've followed the instructions, installed the sound sets - everything works fine so far from Sbelius except one thing.

The String and Woodwind matrix - or patches are sounding the keyswitch note whenever I play the midi keyboard connected to Sibelius.  ( C#1 ) or whatever other note I change it too.

Playback directly from Sibelius and no problem.  As soon as I try to use the keboard and with these specific patch familes, then I hear the keyswitch note playing as well.

I checked with Midiox and there is not extra note coming from the midi controller keyboard.

I've read the guide for Sibelius written by Andi and I noticed that there are some issues with Sibelius.  This issue seems to be different from those explained at the end of the guide.

    I would appreciate any assistance.

  • Hello Alain!

Did you change the keyswitches manually? The sound set will only work correctly, when you leave the keyswitches as they are in the presets, that came with Epic Orchestra. These keyswitches are out of the sounding range of the instruments, so shouldn't make a sound.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi - I had a chance to play around again these last few days and I can confirm that the keyswitch notes are sounding.

I've created new projects in Sibelius with only one staff, I use 64 bit version of server.  One or several instruments of Epic in VEPro5.  Doesn't matter.

With me playing the keyboard through Sibelius - each note I play is accompanied with the keyswitch note being played as well.

In Sibelius when I play a few bars starting at the beginning of the score, I hear the keyswitch note played once which is what you would expect Sibelius to do.

All instruments seems to do this.  Matrix or separate instrument patches all seem to behave similarily.

I can live with this for the time being, I just thought someone should have a look at this and see if It is reproducible on another system.

Lastly, if I read the Epic manual correctly,  the lowest playable note mapped into the matrix that is supposed to be valid is C0 - some very low 5 bass sound.  This is the same note that appears in the intrument as the keyswitch note.

  • Hello Alain!

I checked all the Epic orchestra VI presets and in fact there is one preset, where the keyswitches overlap with the playing range (02 Woodwinds, B0). Nevertheless the keyswitch overrules the note, so it shouldn't be audible - at least it isn't on my machine.

    Please check the following things:
    - Did you load the "VE Epic Orchestra" sound set with Sibelius?
    - Did you make program and channel settings on the Manual sound sets page?
    - Did you load the presets, that came with Epic Orchestra in VE Pro?

If this doesn't help, you can send me your Sibelius score and playback configuration (xml file and data folder) to support [at] vsl.

Depending on your system and Sibelius version, the Playback configuration can be found in one of the following folders:

    Windows XP:
    Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\Sibelius Software\Sibelius 6\Playback Configurations
    or
    Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\Avid\Sibelius 7\Playback Configurations
    Windows Vista and Windows 7:
    Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\Sibelius Software\Sibelius 6\Playback Configurations
    or
    Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\Avid\Sibelius 7\Playback Configurations
    Mac OS X:
    Users/your username/Library/Application Support/Sibelius Software/Sibelius 6/Playback Configurations
    or
    Users/your username/Library/Application Support/Avid/Sibelius 7/Playback Configurations

  • Thanks Andi.

With your help I was able to get it working but I think there may still be a problem with the player.

It turns out that I had loaded a matrix to test the playback configuration.  Then I "added" a patch to a cell in the matrix.  According to the manual I downloaded, to clear the patches from individual cells you can click on the little "x" on the cell editor or double-click on the "empty patch" at the top of the patch list.  Double-clicking  doesn't seem to work.  The cells were still active and becuase I am new to this software I didn't know that - so I had some patches still loaded that were incompatible with the instrument I had configured in Sibelius.  So for sure, the note ranges were all wrong and I was hitting the key-switch note and it sounded sometimes.

The item is actually labled "no patch" at the top of the patch list.  I can drag that to the matrix cell and that clears out the contents but that's too much work.  I should have just cleared the matrix and started over again or used the little "x" to clear the cell.  Beginner error.

One last thing, the excellent manual you wrote for Sibelius optimization shows the correct path for the location of the sound set files if you want Sibelius 7 to find them.  For Windows 7, It is "Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\Avid\Sibelius 7\Sounds"

Thanks for your help.  And now to make some music...
