  • Problem recording midi with VEP - multiple outputs/multiple DAW effects

    Hi,

Sorry I couldnt find any relevant posts in the forum for this.

Im having trouble recording to a midi track in my DAW (Reaper). The midi track sends to a remote instance of VEP which hosts multiple virtual instruments and sends back multiple audio outputs.

During production on a new track everything worked well. I was able to record on midi tracks sent to VEP without problem.

But I have subsequently mixed the track and have added numerous effects to the output channels of the VEP instance.

Now when I try to record a new midi part, I press record and the audio cuts out completely. The midi information is still being received by VEP and the mixer meters react in VEP and in Reaper but I hear nothing. Then when i disarm record the audio output returns and the track plays without problem.

I experimented and found that with fewer effects/outputs I would start to hear audio but it would glitch. So I guess I am pushing things too hard with too many effects on too many outputs?

But this is really disappointing!! It means I have to use more VEP instances with fewer virtual instruments in each (which incidentally works fine)

Am I missing something really obvious here? Is this the expected behaviour? Has anyone else had this problem? What is the best workaround?

    Thanks, Stuart

  • I should say my current work arounds are either

    1. turn off the effects on the VEP output channels while I record or 2. add a new instance of VEP and record with that

Since the second option works theres clearly no issue with system performance (Im using highly speced machines cannected with gigabit ethernet). And although this works for adding a part it clearly doesnt work for rerecording an existing one. Neither of these 2 workarounds are ideal.

    Thanks Stuart
