  • Recording output from MIR

    HI All,

I am running Logic Pro on the Mac side and controling MIR running on a VisionDAW PC via Music over Lan connection. When the composition plays in MIR controlled by the sequencer on the Mac side the output sounds great. However, if I record the output from MIR on a stereo audio track in Logic Pro the sound seems degraded. It seems to lose its sparkle and seems muffled when you play the recording in the sample editor of Logic. There are no DSP inserts in the recording chain. Has anyone else using this setup experiencing the same phenomena?

    Regards,

    Stephen W. Beatty

  • Hi Stephen,

have you ever tried to record another audio-source that way, e.g. an mp3 from MediaPlayer, or just an audio CD? Does this exhibit the same problem? If so, there must be something going on in the setup of the system itself.

    HTH,

  • Thanks Dietz for the reply.

I consulted with my sales tech at Sweetwater Sound and he seemed to think that the difference in the sound quality was the difference in the AD/DA converters in the mac and Lightpipe. He was sure that the recorded file in Logic was identical to the output of the REM audio card in the PC running MIR. To check that I burned a CD of the file on the mac an played it on a high quality stereo system, the sound was excellent and the file was rendered accurately.

He suggested that I use a RME ADI-2 to drive the studio monitors and headphones instead of the Lightpipe that I am currently using.

I guess it makes sense that the digital file can be created stored and moved around without loss. However the quality of the conversion to analog depends on the quality of the AD/DA converters.

  • This sounds reasonable (although I wasn't aware of the fact that the Macs' built-in D/As are _that_ bad). May I regard this case as solved ... ? :-)

    Kind regards,

  • We will see, when I set up the gear.

  • I installed the REM ADI-2 and used the spdif output for the Hammerfall 9652 sound card on the PC side running MIR to listen to the Playback of the midi from MIR and used the optical in/outs on the Mac Pro to listen to the recorded files on the mac pro.

This is the best sound quality that I have heard yet. the Sound is crisp, clean, and has great definition. The muffled sound from the recorded files has disapeared. The Presonus Lightpipe can be used to record the digital sound output of MIR  to a Logic Pro audio track.

The better the A/D, D/A converters the better the sound. The REM equipment blows away the other converters.

  • Thanks for reporting, Stephen! Good to hear that you have found the gear that makes you happy. ;-) .... RME hardware is always a safe bet, BTW.
