  • Different Percussion Sounds on Sibelius

Hi, This is my problem, I'm composing a piece in sibelius which has the snare drum in use. I want the snare to roll at one point, but when I put the roll or trill line above my note it just sounds ridiculously mechanical. I notice though (after clicking on different keys while highlighting my drum instruments in vienna ensembl), that the special edition has a really great rolling snare sample....how do i get it to play that sound rather than the machine gun fire I'm getting at the moment?? Thanks...Dave

  • I cannot give you the solution, but just a hint to search in the right direction:

The trill symbol causes Sibeliuses playback engine to rapidly repeat the single stroke, so it obviously isn’t aware of a dedicated trill sample. Maybe there is a setting in the House-Styles that you can change, so that instead of repeating the note one long note on a different pitch is produced.

  • Hello Dave!

    Please check the following things.
    - Make sure to use the Sibelius instrument "Snare Drum". Otherwise drum rolls will not work for the snare drum.
    - Use the VE Special Edition sound set and reserve a channel with the program "Drums" on the Manual Sound Sets page.
    - The tremolo articulation signs with 4 and 5 beams should then automatically trigger a snare roll.
    - If you also want to trigger it with 3 beams, you will either have to use the Vienna Symphonic Library House Style or edit the Sibelius instrument.

    Best regards,
    Andi
