  • How will this PC perform with VSL SE?

Hi, I've been contemplating getting VSL for a long time. I've been composing in Garritan for a long time and I'm looking for something a bit more realistic. I'll be building a new PC soon (and picking up VSL soon afterwards) and I'd like to make sure it will be capable of handling the Special Edition bundle (I do everything from small orchestral accents in the background of rock songs to full orchestral classical arrangements).

The important specs I'm looking at are as follows (this is a budget PC for me and will also act as my everyday/gaming PC):

    Intel Core i3 2100 3.1ghz processor

    MSI LGA1155/Intel H67/SATA3/DDR3/A&GbE/ATX Motherboard

PNY Optima MD4096KD3-1333 4GB Dual Channel Kit DDR3 1333 MHz PC3-10666 Desktop DIMM Memory Kit

    Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500 GB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s

    Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

(Non relevant specs include case, power supply, gpu, optical drive etc.)

I already have an external audio box that acts as my sound card, connected with decent low end studio monitors, a USB midi keyboard, Cubase 5 and plenty of plugins.

Will I be able to pull up an entire average orchestra using this rig? Or at worst, with track freezing and a very efficient IR plugin during the composition stage will I be able to manage large scale compositions?

If not, should I upgrade to 8 gigs RAM etc. or other relatively inexpensive upgrades in order to better run VSL (I'd rather not go down an expensive upgrade path that leads to SSD's and Slave PC's)?

Also, will I need to purchase anything other than the USB key? (For instance, is the sample player I see used in the recent demo videos or otherwise included/downloadable for free?)

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these questions, and I look forward to joining the VSL community in full force when I get the SE bundle.

  • I would prefer to see more than 4GB of memory to do everything you want it to do.  8GB would be enough I think for a special edition orchestra.  I don't think special edition takes up much in all honesty but you need to compensate for the memory the OS and everything else uses in addition (DAW etc).

The vienna instruments player is free and so is the vienna ensemble player.  The Vienna Pro player and Vienna Vienna Ensemble Pro are an additional cost.  You only need 1 USB Key for your setup.
