  • Slave VE PRO machine- what is the most important factor for good performance? (latency)

RE: my VE PRO slave PC (it is Win XP-32bit duo core)  I am trying to decide whether to simply upgrade my CPU to a Quad core (small investment)

    or

build a W7-64 PC Quad core. (considerable investment)

Other than the additional RAM, is W7-64 going to give me a performance boost? Or should I just stick with my XP machine and update the CPU?

    Please? what is your opinion?

  •  It's all working well except the LAN feature. when I route the midi and audio through the RME Digiface/Multiface, it works wonderfully. evidently the LAN connection isn't working as it's supposed to. I have to set the latency to 1024 in my Host card to get sound that doesn't break up.

    any ideas?

  • the lan feature is CPU intensive. I had a Pentium-D PC and couldn't use it as a slave because the CPU is too slow. If you build a PC slave, make it an i7 920 or better. You might get away with an AMD Phenom or a Core 2 Quad, but i7 920 is absolutely solid. RAM for it is cheap right now. 24GB for around $250

  •  ok, that makes sense. Thanks for the response, that's exactly what I needed to know.

It probably won't make a difference, but I'm going to try to connect them directly with a cross-over cable, and see if eliminating the switch helps.
