VEP question - long ethernet cable ok?

I just bought a slave setup but it's going into my server chassis (supermicro 822). It's VERY loud. I'd like to be able to run approx. 16' ethernet cable and put the slave in another room. Will that cause any problems?

Or do I need to drill a hole in the wall and stick to an 6' cable to feed it to the other room? My landlord might not like that...

All of my samples and VEP will be on the server, Cubase will be the only thing running on my other computer, hopefully:)

Should not be any problem ... Also the shielding of standard ethernet cables is quite well, so i would in any case try it

Thanks Gabriel. I just realized it also means long DVI cable for monitor and long USB extension for wireless keyboard/mouse. I wonder if it's possible to KVM an Apple wireless mouse/keyboard with a PC box that 16 feet away in another room? That would be ideal, to be able to use just one keyboard/mouse setup. Can't see getting around the long DVI cable (or I think the card I just bought supports HDMI, I know my Dell monitor does). Will be an interesting build over the next few days.

Not an ideal setup, loud server and a bunch of SATA-based 10,000 rpm Raptors as opposed to SSDs, but certainly better than my iMac with one 7,200rpm drive and everything else necessarily running FW400. It will be a big improvement for as littls $ as possible, I hope:)

 You want to use Remote Desktop, not long cables for monitor, mouse and keyboard.

I'd actually look into a piece of software called Synergy for sharing the keyboard & mouse between the two computers.

Synergy is great if your computer monitors are side-by-side, but if I'm reading what the OP is trying to do correctly, and unless the OP can see through walls or has the ability to navigate the slave machine's desktop blindfolded, remote desktop may be the best option since his/her slave computer is located in a different room (on the other side of a wall). [;)]

Thanks for all the help guys. Yes, aim is the computer far away from my speakers/writing area because it's very loud. Although I'm starting to think maybe a home theatre box might be the way to go. I'd never heard of them before yesterday, but they SEEM largely to be quiet and meant to be on for hours at a time, so if I can find one at a decent price (under $200) I might just buy a home theatre PC box. I just don't like the idea of owning something and not trying to put it to you, but in this case, a rackmount server that is going to make me jump through hoops might not be the wisest choice.

 Remote Desktop won't cost you a cent, and is the most commonly used method of accessing a slave system.
