  • 15 vsl - woodwinds together with accordeon (updated)

    This is now three movements of a streetmusic inspired suite for 15 woodwinds and accordeon (used Tarilonte samples).

    It's really a challenge to get it not sounding like a lot accordeons with samples. But I'm quite satisfied with the final result. Meanwhile I'm quite familiar with MIR and it's a great pleasure to work with this tool. I don't using other reverbs anymore.

    I've used here of vsl lib:

    Piccolo, Flute 2, Oboe Viennese and French Oboe, Clar in Eb, Clar in Bb, Bassethorn, Bassclarinet, Vienna Horn, Triple Horn, Bassoon 1, Bassoon 2, Contrabassoon (all ext lib). Unfortunataly I havn't Dimension Brass yet. To have physically 4 French-Horns I loaded HSO and WS for Fr-H 3/4. Mixed in MIR Grosser Saal, 7th row, output format Blumlein semiwide, mastered with Vienna Suite, multiband and master eq.

    Any hints for improvements and comments much aprecciated.

  • This sounds like very good music!  Very energetic and interesting.    You are right that you have to separate the woodwinds from the accordeon or they start to warp together.  I would say you need to make your woodwinds sound like a band that is in back of the accordeon, slightly darker and with a lot more reverb to separate them, and then make the accordeon sound like it is standing right in front, with a mono but very clear/dry sound.  that might help to separate them and give it depth.  Also, to have your woodwinds more inaccurate in timing between themselves, in contrast to the perfect timing of the accordeon.

    Thanks, William! Seems to me a good advice. I've tryed to spread the accordeon on the two hot-spots left/right, maybe I've been to much fall in love with this idea. I will give a more dry sounding accordeon a try, hopefully it works, 'cause sometimes the rules are changed and the accordeon play comping-figures only, so it could happen it will sounds a bit lost sometime. But who knows! And: I find the timing is the most issue with MIDI. I didn't quantize anything. But you can't avoid some latency so you have to move often the whole recorded events a bit. To find the right naturally (or even really played) point is sometimes a gimmick. It means, to "design" a perfect timing for the accordeon and slightly inaccurate for the woodwinds will be quite hard. But principally I find the idea very good and I will think about it, maybe with a slightly modified result. So thanks for listening and advices! Frank
