  • New iMac i7 Sandy Bridge with VI Pro impressions

Just want to say to anybody interrested in the new iMac 3.4Ghz Quad-Core i7 Sandy Bridge that i'm very impressed with performance of VI Pro inside Logic 9. I did not make any serious benchmark for now but, its for sure better than my 2.66Ghz Quad-Core Xeon Mac Pro 2009. Both have 16Gb of memory. The CPU on the iMac stay low at low latency buffer size compared to the Mac pro. I'm running Logic in 64 bit on both.

I'm not recommending the i5 version because the Hyper-Threading techonology is reserved for i7. Don't know if Logic and VI pro really take advantage of Hyper-Threading tough.

I wish I could try faster hard drive but since there's no thunderbolt adapters on the market, I can't use my external eSata Raid 0 Drive for now.

I was planning transforming my Mac Pro into a VE Pro server but, when its possible, I prefer staying with VI Pro inside Logic. My basic template includes a woodwinds, a brass and 2 strings sections plus three convolution reverbs (Vienna suite and altiverb). I'm not loading every articulations but each instruments have a minimum of one legato patch plus some short notes.

I dont know if its gonna be powerfull enough to run MIR Pro

    VSL,

1_do you think I will be able to run a reasonnable MIR Pro setup with My iMac i7 and my Mac Pro 2009?:

2_for bigger mixes, will it be possible to send audio tracks (bounced VI) to MIR Pro?

    Thanks

    Fred

  • Thanks for this information. May I ask what kind of musical forces were you running while impressed with the system, that is how much were you pushing it, and were you streaming the sounds from inside the iMac? If that was so, have you the one drive in there, or have you opted for the SSD as well? If so, where did you put the samples?

    Thanks.

  • I will be more specific when working on larger project eventually. But I can say that some projects that where causing problem on at 256 Buffer size the Mac Pro with 2 RAID 0 and 16Gb RAM now run flawlessly on the iMac. I think the big difference is the CPU speed and maybe the 1333 ram.

I'm waiting for the thunderbolt adapters to put my sounds on external eSata RAID. So I have only the built in 7800rpm drive wich I've upgrade to 2Gb. I have no streaming problem for now, the loading time will be better with more and faster drives. Since I already have external RAID, I will wait till the price goes down for the SSD drives. Or maybe put the system on a smaller SSD. But its nice without anyway.
