  • Protools with 12 Instances of Vienna

    Hello,

I have a question regarding system resources in my current setup. I'm running Protools on a 12-core 2.93G MacPro with 32G Ram. I also sync another MacPro with 16G Ram. I run 6 instances of Vienna on each, 12 total. Only a stereo output out of each one. The reason I run so many is because I separate my Drums, Basses, Pianos, Synths, Strings, Brass, Woodwinds... however it seems that my system has a hard time keeping up with everything.

During some testing I discoved that even if I don't load any instances in VEP, just having the 12 "connections" to the servers inside Protools (disconnected of course since there are no instances loaded) they eat up about 20% of my power. A couple friends told me that I should try to condense everything in as few instances as possible so you have less server connections. Others say that it won't make a big difference and I just need another computer.

Any thoughts or help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

  • Try out the demo of VE Pro. RTAS is a terrible format for samples, and VE Pro might help you get round some of the the limitations, without having to buy a new computer.

  • Hey DG,

thanks for the reply. I thought it was clear from my post that I do use VEP. The way I connect to the servers is through RTAS. Is there any other way? Thanks.

  •  You can still bus things the way you like by using one instance with multiple MIDI ports. I would suggest trying this before spending any more money.

  • Thank you DG, I'm experimenting with that now and it seems an improvement.
