    my understanding is that the speed of the samples varies with host's project tempo. is there a way to manipulate that manually without using a different tempo?

    The speed of the sample is always the same. It doesn't alter with the speed of the project. However, if the tempo is slower, then more of the sample will be heard. Does this answer your question?
