  • two MIR questions

I am wondering if anything odd has been noticed about the tenor trombone (solo) in MIR SE.  When I use the instrument set up for MIR it sounds unusually mid-high frequency, as if it had been EQ'd up over the dry samples in the mid high range.  I had to switch to a cardioid general purpose instrument because it sounded strangely metallic.  Has anyone noticed this?  It does not happen with the ensemble trombones or the bass trombone.  Just the tenor tbn solo.

The other thing is I switched from the conductor's mike position to the 7th row position in the large Konzerthall and with the same dry/wet ratios it sounded like LESS reverb in the trumpets and trombones and tuba.  I cranked up the wet and it still sounds rather dry compared to the CLOSER mike position.  I don't understand this at all and wonder if something went wrong, or if it is just a characteristic of that particular place in the hall - like the sound is extremely clear there? A sweet spot that actually sounds clearer than the conductor's position?  Or perhaps this is the result of highly directional sound like those brass instruments?   What I am getting  does not sound bad but it just seems like far less wet reverb sound than one would expect.

7th row near the middle axis is considered to be "the" place in Grosser Saal of the Vienna Konzerthaus. Conductor's position is known (and sometimes dreaded) for its typcial slap-backs from the sides ... Not that I did conduct anything there *LOL* ... This is an almost mythical sound-wizard's trade secret, stolen from the endless wisdom of one of my teachers, Tonmeister Prof. Helmut Gottwald (1938-2004), a man who did countless legendary recordings in this hall between the 1960ies and 1990ies.

We know that the IR volumes are a bit inhomogeneous between individual mic-positions, and even more so between different Venues ... that's why your question gives me the perfect occasion to point at this recent announcement of MIR RoomPacks' Version 2 release ... 😊 - More homogeneous overall volume is one of the improvements we have put a lot of effort in.

The sharper sound of the Tenor Trombone comes from the fact that you are now "looking into the instrument's bell", as soon as you direct the Icon directly at the main microphone. The original dry recording was made a bit off-center, to get the "nicer" sound you're used to from the Vienna instrument's Tenor Trombone. Just turn the instrument's "nose" away from the main mic to get a smoother sound (... the same way you would try to achieve a more mellow sound in real life).

     [:D] COOL! [:D]

  •  Thanks Dietz that clears it up!  That position in the 7th row is extremely  good-sounding and I can see why you decided to use it.
