  • Can't direct sound from MIR to Cubase

    Hello I decided to try the MIR demo and so far I like it. I can use it in standalone with my keyboard and using LoopBe I was able to get Cubase to direct the midi tracks to MIR. Now the problem is I can't seem to direct the audio from MIR back to Cubase.
    It seems I am missing something. I read the manual about using MIR and a DAW on the same computer (which I am trying to do btw).
    I will try to explain in detail so that you can see more easily what I might be doing wrong.



    I open MIR first and load an instrument.

    As Audio driver I chose ASIO4ALL v2

    The audio output window says:
    1 HD Audio Output 1
    2 HD Audio Output 2
    etc up to 8 outputs

    I then open Cubase.

    In Device Setup -> VST Audio System I choose "Generic Low Latency ASIO Driver" as I guess I can't have ASIO4All v2 here at the same time as MIR.

    Then under VST Connections -> External Instruments I have made an external instrument called Vienna MIR which I can only set to: Audio Device: Generic Low Latency ASIO Driver and Device port left/right: Realtek Digital Input 1/2.

    I make a midi track which makes the instrument in MIR respond to my midi inputs in Cubase.
    I make an audio track. This audio track can only have "Stereo in" as input. Nothing is recorded on this track if I try pressing record and playing through MIR.


    After going through this I still can't get any sound recorded in Cubase. Is two soundcards needed to make this work or is it just my drivers?

     You should be using the same driver (ASIO4ALL) in both Cubase and MIR, if you intend to use the same soundcard.

    Also, how are you intending to get the audio into MIR? Are you using a physical loopback, or does your soundcard have a loopback software?

    Alright, now I'm using ASIO4ALL. Maybe I am misunderstanding you now but I want the sound to go from MIR into cubase, not into MIR. I already get sound from MIR but I want to record it somehow. I actually have no clue what a loopback is, is that what it's called when doing what I want to do (getting the sound to direct back to cubase)? I doubt my soundcard has a loopback feature in it's software, it's some standard Realtek soundcard that came with the motherboard. What is a physical loopback? From your answer I suspect that the problem might be that I need some kind of hardware device to recieve the sound from MIR and send it to Cubase?

     Yes, I understood what you wanted, but obviously I didn't explain properly,

    There are 3 options:

    1. Run a physical cable from a spare output your soundcard to an input and then record the input into Cubase. This is unlikely to work for you, as I doubt you have spare outputs on your card.
    2. Software loopback (a software version of a physical cable). Again I don't think this will work with your card.
    3. Route MIR to the soundcard output and record it with a 3rd party program such as Total Record.

    thanks for your interest in Vienna MIR! Sorry that I didn't reply earlier, but I've cought a really bad cold these days and I'm running at half speed :-/

    The key information is: You need either a ASIO-64bit-compatible sound card which allows for several applications using it at the same time. Or you use two audio devices (one could be the built in-sound card of your computer's motherboard).

    There's a whole chapter in the MIR Manual covering your options and all the Do's and Dont's. The part that's interesting for you starts on p. 78.

    Thanks for all the help! As I suspected my soundcard is probably the problem. I will try the demo of Total Recorder and see if that works. :)

    Didn't work with Total Recorder either, that's a shame. At least I know how awesome MIR is now - I will put it on my "things to buy when I get the money" list. :)

    Total Recorder records anything that comes out of your soundcard, so if you stick it in record and hit play in Cubase it will record the MIR output.
