  • Holiday Special: Purchase Advice Needed

With this year's specials, it looks like I will be able to purchase a couple libraries.  There are a couple different ways I could go, and am not sure which route would be the best use of limited funds.  I currently have all four of the SE libraries.

Option 1): Emphasize standard libraries.  The main advantage would include getting more velocity layers and chromatic samples.  The only main articulation gained would be fast legato.

Option 2): Emphasize more of a mix of standard and extended libraries.  The advantage with this approach would be getting additional articulations, and the musical expressiveness contained in the extended libraries, for a couple key areas.  But, the overall breadth of what I could afford to purchase would be more limited.

Which route would represent the best route given limited funds?  Generally, is it better to go with depth or breadth?  The reality is that I will never be able to purchase every (even primary) Vienna library, and will always need to use some of the SE libary patches for major instruments.

Note: Libraries that I am currently considering include (depending on which option is ultimately chosen): AP Strings, both standard and extended; Solo Strings, both standard and extended; Woodwinds I, standard (regardless of decision adding Woodwinds I extended is probably beyond my total budget at this point); Harps, standard; and possibly Brass I, standard.  There is no way that I could buy all of these libraries at this point.  In terms of use, the order of priorities would be strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion.  At the very least, I will end up with one extended library via Holiday Option #1.

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.

  • In my opinion, your biggest value is the complete solo solo strings. Layering a solo instrument on top of a section provides an incredible amount of realism - and the variety of articulations in the solo strings collection is mind blowing. I think the solo strings are the best thing that VSL has ever made (besides the software). Since you already have the SE bundles, the added realism of the solo strings to your existing section strings will be jaw-dropping.

    That's my $.02

    Good luck.
