Expression - Velocity crossfade
Hi everyone ! I have a little question about expression and velocityXfade. I want to control the volume of my sustains note, but it's a bit tricky : expression gives a very smooth fade, but with no changes in the sound (very "computer generated"), and velocityXFade on the other hand has multiple velocity layers, but no smooth transition between them (most of the time we can clearly hear the layers, especially between the stronger layer, and the one juste below. It's not awful, but it's there). So, how do you guys manage to combine these two ? when you record midi, you just use velocityxfade, for example, and adjust expression if needed later ? Thx for your answers, and sorry for my english ^^ I'm french.

the trumpet Bb, for example : Between 100 and 106 Velocity Xfade, there is a huge difference of sound which makes the layers clearly audible. for the special edition, i can understand, it's a lighter version, maybe with less velocity layers. Anyway, it's no big deal, but i wanted to know what is the "correct way". Personally, I Control the velocity Xfade, and i adjust Expression later on if needed.

As you've figured out, there is no correct. Way. Personally I never use velocity xFade on Solo instruments, because of the phasing issue. On Ensemble patches it is not such a problem.
As for a workflow, I tend to do a roughish programming with legato and staccato (using only 2 keyswitches and a breath controller) and then go into more detail on the subsequent passes.

thank you for your answer. And to control your volume, what cc do you use ? Expression for solos and velocity XFade for ensembles ? It seems to be impossible to control the volume automation just with one fader and one CC, it's a bit annoying, and my BCF2000 is quite useless for now ^^. I always end up drawing manually the automation.

For solos I use a combination of Expression and Filter. For ensembles I use Velocity xFade. I set the same controller for Expression and Filter in the solo instruments to be the same controller for xFade in the Ensembles. Actually my set-up is more complicated than that, but you get the idea.

yeah, i get the idea. I used to combine velocity crossfades and expression in vienna instruments, but t was a pain in th... because of the basic curve. now That I have instruments pro, I see that there are much more possibilities. Thx, i'm going to look at this master filter. I suppose you set it differently depending on which solo instrument you're using ? Thank you for all these tips of yours ! ^^
