  • Veinna Suite (Convo) in Pro Tools not functioning

    Hi.

I just started using PT 9, and Vienna Suite.  Things are working fine, except for the Convoltion Reverb.  It loads fine and VI Pro instruments sound good, but I only get the dry sound through the VS Reverb...no Reverb.

I've tried it as a plugin directly attached to the instruments, and through the Aux type setup.  Other reverbs work well both ways, but VS Convo is just not doing it.  Is this an RTAS problem, or is there somthing I can do to make it work?

    Thanks.

  • Are you using latencies lower than 128 samples, by any chance? That won't work, as pointed out in the VS Manual.

  • Hello, Dietz.

Yes, I'm aware of the manual suggestion on this topic.

I had the Hardware Buffer settings at 512.  I changed it to 1024 and VS Convo now works.  I'm using 3 processors for PT.  Every other setting is left to default.  Of course, 1024 makes playing VI Pro instruments more delayed than even 512 does, but the playback sounds good!

I've read several things about RTAS not being the most effective way to use plugins/inserts.  Or, could I lower the Buffer settings with a more modern Mac Pro?

BTW, I'm using 5 orchestra strings and Flute I presets in this setup

    Thanks, Dietz!

  • I asked Karel Bassez, one of the VS developers, to look into your issue. This is what he wrote:

"When using 0 latency mode in the Converb, there are restrictions on the process buffer size: "Zero latency mode requires a fixed audio buffer size that is a multiple of 64. Use a power of 2 as buffer size for best performance." (copy/paste from the message box that pops up when the host sets an irregular buffer size). The plugin will not do any convolution while improper buffers are fed to it. Possibly PT is dividing its buffers somehow on this system. To avoid any of these problems just set the Convolution Reverb latency to something that is not 0. Equal to the PT buffer size should give the best performance and load balancing."

    EDIT:

"I've actually just verified this in PT. It happens here too. 0 latency mode seems unusable in PT with any process buffer size. Might be something to fix for a next update, if it can be fixed at all that is."

    HTH,

  • Thank you so much!

I just bumped the latency up to 64 in VS Convo, with PT set to 512, and I'm getting the great sound of the VS Convo now!  There are so many simple little things in this techno music thing, that I tend to overlook the easy ones.  Over the past years I've gotten used to expecting that some things just won't work without a lot of trouble!

Thanks again, Dietz, for getting the answer for me!

  • You're welcome! Good to hear that it works now.
