  • Session Sample Rate - clocking and SRC question

    I have been working at 24-bit/44.1k forever. My final output is 99% for audio CD (or worse, for digital delivery)  and I have never had an issue delivering 24-bit/44.1k, ever. Happy. Sounds great. I have been involved in more than a few double-blind shootouts of higher sample rates over the years, and NEVER had conclusive results that a higher sample rate would get us anything at the mix. Factor in convenience of syncing multiple giga slaves and other digital devices within the studio (that I don't use anymore for the most part), the convenience, processing power, and reduced storage needs of 44.1 far outweighed any perceptible audio benefit of a higher rate.

    With that said -- a collaborator wants to do a session (big band, everyone plays live, what a concept) at 96k (or 88.2, but there is no justification to not work 96k), just to do it... trying to figure out what my downside is if I wanted to overdub some VSL or other VIs (via VE Pro) to the 96k session.

    VSL instruments are delivered at 44.1/24bit, right? So how does VE Pro and VI Pro deal with SRC when clocking to a 96k session?  What about other VIs hosted in VE Pro? Spectrasonics? Kontakt4? The Komplete suite of plugs?

    WHAT HAPPENS to our 44.1 VSL samples when locked to a 96k session using VE Pro? At what stage do the samples get converted? Which plugin or app does the conversion? Are we better off this way, vs. simply running at 44.1 for the sake of the samples? Or is there an alternative workflow?

    What are you guys who routinely run at 96k (or 88.2) doing?

    for higher sample rates I used 24 tracks as my basis

    At 88.2KHz 24 Tracks played back smoothly with an average cpu loadacross the cores of 50%

    At 96KHz 24 Tracks played back smoothly with an average cpu loadacross the cores of 60%

    At 176KHz between 20-22 tracks could be sucessfully played back

    At 192Khz between 18-20 tracks could be sucessfully played back

    So does this mean there is a significant CPU hit when we work at higher sample rates?

    What about the audio quality -- has anyone really compared the "native" sample rate of 44.1 vs. a real-time SRC from 96k ?

    Should I simply work at 44.1 and not entertain the high sample rate idea?
