  • How to move library to a new hard drive and how big does the drive need to be?

I hope these are simple questions.  I purchased more VSL samples and I need a larger hard drive.

    1. How much leftover room should a hard drive have?  In other words, do you need 10%, 20%, or 30% free?  Or some other percentage entirely ... This drive is used entirely to play back the VSL samples and is an external firewire 800 drive.
    2. Is there a simple way to move my instruments from my old hard drive to the new one?  I don't want to break out the DVDs and re-install, it would be great to be able to drag, drop, and re-direct VSL to the new location.
    That's it for now.  Thanks.

    1. I would leave at least 30%.
    2. Yes, just copy them to the new drive and run Directory Manager. In fact, i would say that you should back up your samples onto a hard drive anyway, because in the case of a drive failure, copying them back over is much quicker than re-installing them from DVD.

  • Hi DG. I recently moved my VSL SE to an external hard drive. I ran the directory manager. This was the result: The instruments/samples/patches are being recognized within the Vienna Instruments standalone, BUT within Logic 9 my Vienna has been rendered instrumentless. I've never posted here before. I greatly appreciate any assistance. I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out. -JNJ

  • Just bumping my post below. I've seen you post a lot on these boards, so I think you could help me in an instant. Thank you so much for your time.

  • Did you ever get a response from DG or anyone else about how to use VSL in Logic once you moved it to another hard drive?

    Hi James,

    Sorry for the delayed reply.

Please try the following (after you have closed all VSL programs):

    1) Remove all folders from your Directory Manager.

    2) Assign the sample content (in the new location) again by drag and drop from your finder

    3) Restart your machine (just to be safe). If you are using all the latest VSL Software, then this won´t be necessary.

    Best,

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,  thanks for the swift response.  Forgive me for being a bit slow, but I must confirm to ensure that I understand:

    (1) if I remove all the folders from my Directory Manager and dragging the files to a new location, will VSL still work through my DAW (Logic 8 in my case)?  Or do I somehow need to move the Directory Manager?  I just want to be one hundred percent sure that I can continue using the files in Logic (which is crucial for me).  If not, then please advise if there is some alternate way to move the files.

    (2) if I am able to move the files as you advise, then will I still need Directory Manager?  I thought Directory Manager was necessary for me to use the files?  If it is not, should/could I delete Directory Manager after I've moved the files?

Again, sorry if I am missing something obvious here (and please let me know if I am), I just needed to be sure before doing this, as any major disruption to my use of VSL would be a disaster in my work!  Thanks again for your help.

    Cheers,

    Stan Seymour

  • Thank you to all of you who replied. I actually solved the problem a few weeks ago. For me the missing link was going to Preferences>>Audio Units Manager within Logic Pro 9. Then I chose to "Reset & Rescan Selection". The problem was Logic not VSL, ultimately, and that is why I could use the stand-alone VSL sampler, but not the one within Logic before solving the problem. Thank you Paul, and thank you everyone else who posted on this thread. -James Niles Joyal

    Hello SSeyour,

the Directory Manager "shows" your Vienna Instruments where to find the sample content, that´s all.

Here is a short video tutorial on "How to use the Directory Manager" and of course it is also described in the Vienna Instruments Manual.

So the answer to your first question: You are not dragging any files TO a new location, you are taking the files FROM this new location and drag these folders into the Directory Manager. This will not affect the files at all. You don´t need to move anything, and nothing is moved. There is just a reference to your sample content.

Second answer: There is no need and no use to delete the Directory Manager.

I hope that the video tutorial will help you understand the system more!

    Best,

    Paul
