  • Thanks I'll check out Vienna Suite. I recently scored a film with Altiverb and the depth and range of its impulses blew away my old reverbs. It sounded phenomenal! The only issue I had was clicks and pops which is due to it still being 32 bit, and I can't have that sort of issue with my tight deadlines, WAY too stressful when delivering my scores to post houses. So I need something more solid and reliable. But what a tease - how can I go back to my boring old reverbs? A major limitation of MIR for me(aside from having to purchase a super expensive computer) seems to be that you have to have ALL the VST's and instruments on host computer which is impossible for me. I use Vienna Ensemble Pro to host all my VSTs on other computers. That alone would take up 16GB of RAM not to mention valuable processing power I need for my host computer to run my DAW properly. Maybe MIR is too much a head of its time as was Gigastudio when it came out. If however there was away to have MIR run on a dedicated computer with VST's on other computers - that would be a better option and more affordable. BUT if its possible to render audio first and THEN utilize MIR (thus eliminating having active VSTs) that's seems doable.

    1. Clicks and pops have nothing to do with Altiverb being a 32bit program. There is something else going on here.
    2. MIR Pro will deliver what you want. However, you'll have to wait a couple/three/foru..... months.

    BTW it is sort of possible to play audio in MIR< but with a tight deadline I doubt that you'd want to go this route, particularly as it would require rendering each track separately. [:(]

I certainly cannot rule out that it has something to do with running 32bit Sonar on a 64bit system. At any rate, I don't have time to figure it out with my deadlines looming all the time. Very much looking forward to MIR Pro in the future updates. Very exciting technology. As for rendering audio - I already render my instruments as 16 separate stereo tracks.. some are brass ensembles, strings, etc. I wonder if I could use MIR to give each section its own place on a virtual sound stage?

    Yes, of course - that's what it's made for! 😊 ... but MIR relies on hundreds of IRs from a single stage to achieve this, so the system requirements are higher than with one or two conventional convolution reverbs.

  • If I can use MIR (AND) have my vsts instruments on separate slave computers, that would be ideal. Can't do it all on the same computer - too many VSTs

  • That's not the problem - MIR will do everything that VEPro does, with one MAJOR exception: It doesn't offer LAN support. You would have to route back MIR's mix to your main DAW via (digital or analog) audio lines.

  • Thats unfortunate. I've become very spoiled by Vienna Ensemble Pro's ease of use. Just plug it in and it works. Simple.

  • So MIR is not for you - not yet, I should add. MIR Pro will fill in the gaps (and much more than that).

  • One question for Dietz :

    Why cant we have separate stereo outputs for instruments?

    Wouldnt that be easy to implement? If I had -say - 10 stereo outputs in Mir, I would be able to render 10 instruments at the same time routing them back to Cuase, then the next ten....

    At least for me this would be a perfect work-around until I purchase a new machine somewere next year.


  • I completely understand what you're after, but Vienna MIR is pretty much locked in its routing possibilities to what we have now, due to the underlying architecture. ... after all, a "One Stop Mixing Solution" for virtual orchestral music was the main goal of this application.

    That said, rest assured that we will try to make MIR Pro as flexible as possible. ;-)

    While I do not recall exact specifics, there have been known issues when trying to use Altiverb with Sonar.  Pops and clicks were very common when trying to use Altiverb within Sonar.  As a Sonar user, when starting to research high end reverbs, it became clear that Altiverb was not going to be a viable option for me, given the reported problems.  Worse, at the time (well over a year ago IIRC), the various parties involved indicated that no fix would be forthcoming.  Perhaps that has now changed.

    If you have the time, it might be worth contacting Altiverb to see if the situation has been resolved/fixed.
