  • Installation Issues

I've just been installing all my VSL stuff on a new machine. Everything went fine until I got to WWII. With the woodwinds the first 2 discs went fine, but then when it asked for the 3rd, the progress window suggested it still hadn't finished processing the 2nd. With the 3rd disc in everything stalled for a while, then suddenly a whole bunch of processed CABs appeared in the progress list, but all identified as CABs from DVD2. Finally the whole thing stalled, the installer said that I had a corrupt file, and suggested that my DVD drive might be overheating, which wasn't the case.

I tried again, and eventually got WWII installed, but the process was still jittery. It still stalled for a long period, on inserting DVD3, and asked for DVD3 when it meant 4, but it seems to have just about staggered home.

It made me a little wary, though, that my DVDs, which have always been fine, may be degrading. I noticed that their surfaces appear quite scratched. I'm the world's fussiest individual when it comes to storing them, so I assume the scratches are due to specks of dust that come between the disc and the surface of the DVD tray in my machine. When I update my system next time I'm worried that they may be beyond useable.

So my question is, if I copy the CABs and .info file to an external harddrive, will I be able to install from that? I ask because the installer seems hardwired to expect certain CABs on certain discs, so I don't know whether it will be persuaded to look anywhere other than an optical drive. Does anyone know?

  •  The best thing to do, IMO, is to make a backup of the drive on which they are installed. That way it's just an easy copy job to re-install.

  • Pingu, I did experience the same behavior during install process with ww II from completely new dvds. So I don't think it comes from scratches on surfaces of dvds. I suppose it's more likely a manufacturing-defective. And the wrong asking for dvd 3 (means dvd4) was a slip of the pen in the installer-script. Seems to me. And yes, eventually I've got it installed as well. For another copy to an external harddrive I do it likewise DG wrote.

  •  Thanks guys. I will do just that.

Thanks especially doubleattack - I'm over the moon to find out that someone else has had exactly the same issue. My new computer malfunctioned the moment it arrived, frying a USB stick, and I'm still quite jumpy about the replacement, so I'm really, really happy to find it wasn't the DVD drive messing around.
