Is it possible to expand the key-range of instruments?

Example: Can I play a D6 with an instrument that has a range to C6 only? I think this was possible with the gigastudio in a way, that I just had to change the key-range, so the highest sample was just being altered.
So I´m wondering, if there is a way with VI pro other than using the pitch-wheel.
