  • VE PRO RTAS MAC SLAVE TO MAC DP7 IN DAE MODE?

Hello,. My orchestestal templete for professional film scoring is currently 20 instances of Kontakt 4 loaded in Bidule on a MAC 8 core slave routed by MOL to a separate"master" DAW MAC running DP7.  I was excited to incorporate VE Pro into my system, but then learned of the 16 MIDI channel per instance AU limitation.

If I understand this correctly I would have to open 20 instances of the server interface on my DAW machine,  instead of just one large VE template, similar to how I have my bidule template??

What I found dissaopointing about this, is that I felt this AU limitiation was not clearly stated in the manual, or website ads, as everything stated that you could load VI's as VST's... I figured this isn't a big deal as I could just load Kontakt as a VST plug in.. I didn't realize VEPRO dosen't support VST on a mac.. maybe I'm not understanding that correctly, please correct me if i'm missing something..

So, my question... If I run DP7 as a front end for Pro Tools in DAE mode ( I have a PT HD2 system) would I be able to access more than 16 midi channels per instance as it would be an RTAS plug in on my DP7/PT DAW machine?

    Thanks!

    Christopher

  • The VST3 and RTAS versions of the VE Pro Server Interface plugin support multiple MIDI ports indeed, so your solution should work. Note that Pro Tools only supports up to 16 MIDI ports (that's 16*16=256 MIDI channels) per plugin instance. More will cause crashes in Pro Tools (this will be fixed in the next update).

ProTools will indeed limit the number of midi channels to 256 total per session.  (I have tried in the past to import some tracks from other sessions and PT has limited the number of them to 256).

When you say '16 MIDI ports' do you mean the nodes that show up in ProTools?  I regularly have more than 16 midi nodes active in my sessions, and no problem - I don't use all 16 channels in every one.  I have a very modular setup, so I just deactivate auxes with VePro on them when I don't need them.  The session I'm currently working on has 23 nodes/ports active.  My current template has 15 instances in VePro server (PC) - split between 32 and 64 bit -  and each RTAS instance has 8 nodes available (but not all used...).

It seems to me that while each of the midi nodes in the plug-in menu have 16 channels available for routing, once I get up to 256 total midi tracks in the session, that's all I can have.
