  • Sibelius String Harmonic Sustains and Pitch Bend

    Hello everyone!

I have a couple of questions to ask.

    1) How is it possible in a passge of a series of tied harmonics (same note, different values) to have the corresponding SE Plus harmonic sample being looped uninterruptedly for as long as the notation indicates (quite several bars), while at the same time have the velocity x-fader respond to alterations in dynamics, without further "cutting" the sample short? Keep in mind that I am trying to avoid using slurs (with unchecked playback in properties) instead of ties as that will trigger again the harmonic sample, quite loudly.

    2) Is it possible through the use of Control Change messages from within Sibelius to make the VI Pitch slider cover a distance of more than 2 semitones?

    Thanks in advance,

    Raoul

  • Any thoughts, anyone?

    Thanks again,

    Raoul

  • Hello Raoul!

The orchestral and chamber strings harmonics are looped, so the notes should be held as long as notated. The solo strings harmonics are not looped. You will have to retrigger them for long notes. If the attack for retriggering is too loud, you could use a lower dynamic and create a hairpin afterwards. For layout considerations you can hide the dynamic mark and the hairpin without losing their playback effects.

Sorry, but pitch can not be bended by more than two semitones.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Thanks for your reply, Andi.

In addition to what you suggest on the harmonics I'll see how the attack slider can further assist in the process.

In terms of the pitch bending, is it possible to affect the VSL samples from within the Sibelius alone and not through the VI's pitch bender, or this can only be done in a DAW and only after having exported as audio the sibelius file?

    Best,

    Raoul

  • Hi Raoul!

The syntax of pitch bend commands in Sibelius is ~B0,xx

~B0,0 = bend down by two semitones

~B0,32 = bend down by one semitone

    ~B0,64 = original pitch

~B0,96 = bend up by one semitone

~B0,127 = bend up by two semitones

It's also possible to record pitch bend performances with Sibelius.

  • Thanks for your reply, Andi. I am afraid that I was not clear in my question - my fault!

Actually, I was referring to using CC#100 and 101, in an effort to overcome the 2 semitone bending barrier using Registered Parameter Messages (page 358 in the Sibelius 6 Reference Manual). I have tried what is being described there but with no success.

My question is the following: If I use RPMs in order to change the range of the pitch bend within Sibelius, while not using the VI pitch bend at all, will that affect respectively the VSL samples, or is it that RPMs are not supported by VSL? - hope I am making sense here...

Thanks in advance for your time,

    Raoul

  • Hello Raoul!

The Vienna Instruments Player doesn't support pitch bending by more than two semitones, regardless which MIDI Data you send.
