  • French Horn (or similar) and Con Sordino

    Hello:

I currently own the Special Edition Bundle, plus the Vienna Horn and Triple Horn download instruments.  Unless I've missed it, I cannot find any Horn that has "mute" patches or that supports "con sordino".

Where can I find a French Horn-type sound that I can mute?  Thank you in advance,
    John

  • There are no muted french horn samples. A bit of a glaring omission which many have commented on but no firm comment yet from VLS about if and when this may be rectified. There are the stopped samples which are sort of similar in as much as they change the basic sound. It's noticeable that none of the download brass not available in the symphonic cube like the Bb trumpet the cornet and now the flugelhorn have any muted patches. Perhaps thats an indication VSL may be thinking about issueing a separate muted brass product. Just my speculation though.

  • Hi,

I've written several "nasty" comments to VSL about this lack of muted French horns, but never gotten an answer. I love the VSL quality, but because of these missing samples, I've had to look else where for brass.

I wonder how the Rite of Spring was done without the muted horn?

You mention "looking elsewhere".  Did you find something acceptable and if so where?  Hope you don't mind my asking.

  • I prefer not to speak about other products here on the VSL forum. Ask the question on the VI control forum. [B]

  • Hi guys,

I don´t want to leave this unanswered. Even "nasty comments" don´t help us to automatically establish the booking of the players we need to cover new recordings.

We have been recording instruments for the last 10 years, every day. When we are recording an instrument, this covers MANY session over the course of at least one year. Some instruments could be organized easier, others are hard to get - and we want the best players to give you the best quality [:)]

We´re still recording every day, and there are still much ground to cover. Some instruments will be added earlier, others will be released later on. If you preferred instrument is not included, please don´t take that personally.

    Thanks for your understanding!

    Best,

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

Great to hear that you guys are constantly recording. As for the muted french horn, imo not all the articulations would be needed. It's more of an effect that lots of composers use (sfz-sustain), so a minimal number of articulations would do. No need for all the complicated legato articulations.

Thinking about your recording, I'm sure with brass players, you could easily do 3 different instrument libraries at the same time, since all brass players need to rest their lips. Your engineer would always record to the corresponding dedicated track and the editing time would be reduced. Just an idea...... [Y]

  • It is bizarre that there isn't muted brass in such a huge library, that's a really strange priority given some of the more exotic things included.

That said, while it exists, muted flugel is very unusual.  I didn't even know it existed until Dave mentioned it here.  Trumpet, bone, horn, tuba would definitely be the high priority for mutes, other instruments like cornet and flugel may use them but once you start adding mutes the differences between them and trumpet are probably going to be less obvious.

  • The trumpet and trombone mutes (straight mute?) and already included in the extended portion of the DVD libraries. [G]

  • Thank you everyone for the feedback.  I still have one question:  the "VE Woodwinds + Brass" sound set includes an option "Horn Vienna Stopped".  As far as I can tell this has no effect.  Which matrix is this supposed to be used with?

    Thanks again,
    John
