  • Reduced Range on Second Instance of Instrument

I am using 2 instances/staves of Viola Ensembles (amongst other intruments), but the second instance has a reduced range?

The first stave of Violas will play as high as Aflat5, but the second instance only plays back as high as D5.

All staves are routed to its own instrument, ie Viola (a) is midi channel 5, Viola (b) is midi channel 6.

Is it a RAM issue? Ie it can't bring in any more samples to the project?

(System is 2GB DDR3, project is currently using 1.29GB)

    All help is appreciated.

  • Hello Shayne!

This sounds a bit odd. I didn't come across such a problem yet. Are you sure you have loaded the same matrix in both instruments and tried out the same patch? Loading the same matrix for a second time doesn't take more RAM, because all the contained samples are already loaded.
2 GB RAM is not very much. It could very well be that you are at the limit with 1.29 GB for VE because the system and Sibelius also do need some RAM. On the Perform page of the Vienna Instruments you can see how much free RAM you have left. I wouldn't go under 100 MB free RAM, because the system could get unstable.

  •  Hi Andi,

Viola 2 isn't following commands to reset to default sustain, where as viola 1 is. It is staying in legato following a slur and is not responding to Technique Texts such as "ord." etc.

    Does this help any?

    Shayne

  •  Also,

I cannot light up the "reset to sustain" option in the perform tab on any instruments.

If this has something to do with it?

    Shayne

  • Hello Shayne!

Which Sibelius version are you using?
I think this is a Sibelius problem, which according to some users has been solved in Sibelius 6.2.

The "Reset to Sustain" button has nothing to do with that at all. This button lets you return to the slowest Patch in a speed-controlled Matrix. You can use it when
you're playing a fast passage, and then want to get a sustained tone for the last note of that phrase.

    Andi

  • Hi Andi,

    I am using Sibelius 5.2.5

I seem to have solved it, although the method I have used in somewhat unexpected, the details follow as it may help other users.

The problem I had was that the viola has a lower range in "legato" than it does in "sustain". Following a legato passage, Viola 2 was not resetting to it's default sustain playback, but Viola 1 was (hence Viola 1 was able to perform the high range, but Viola 2 was not).

I was able to solve it from within the Sibelius mixer.

Eg, for Viola 1, in the drop-down menu on the third line, I selected the first instance of the vienna.viola.ensemble. The instrument then defaulted to MIDI channel 5.

Then for Viola 2, in the drop-down menu on the third line, I selected the second instance of the vienna.viola.ensemble. This then also defaulted to MIDI channel 5.

Previously I was changing the second Viola to MIDI channel 6. But if it is left to MIDI channel 5, as unexpected as it seems, both Violas play back completely independantly (as if they are on different MIDI channels), and both reset to sustained. Both are routed independantly on the Ensemble mixer too.

It's very strange, but it works. I have also checked this with the 4 violin ensembles, all are defaulting on MIDI channel 1, but as long as they use different vienna.violin.ensemble options from the drop down menu on line 3 of Sibelius' mixer, they remain completely independant.

Everything seems ok and sounds great.

    Many thanks,

    Shayne

  • Thanks for your report, Shayne!

I can verify that the way you solved this problem works well with Sibelius 5.2.5 indeed.

  • Hi guys,

I have been having the same problem with Sibelius 6.2. In the past I had to create a new ensemble for every Trumpet etc (whenever I required more than one instrument that had the same sound ID in the sibelius mixer). This really got completely confusing especially when trying to mix the positioning of the instruments.

Since I read this post and followed the workaround everything seemed to be working OK, however since I just installed VI Pro this morning, everything has gone haywire and the workaround doesn't seem to work anymore.

Andi, how do you guys use Sibelius 6.2 with a single VE Pro with multiples of the same instrument ID in consecutive order? Have you come across this problem and if so what kind of workaround do you employ?

    Kind Regards

    Erin Mckimm

  • Hello Erin!

If the channel assignment for instruments with the same Sound ID does not work automatically, it normally helps assigning the channels in the Sibelius mixer (only Sibelius 6, not in Sibelius 5). If this doesn't help either, maybe one of your Sibelius instruments has the wrong Sound ID. In this case adding the instrument once again and cutting and pasting the content from the old instrument usually helps.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi,

Thankyou very much for your reply. I will try this out and see how it goes.
