alas I can find no documentation on the steinberg site for the 5.1 update to vst epression (controllers). All they have is the 5.5 new features pdf. Ive been trying to figure out how to get the V-span working in VSL using vst expression but have had no luck. Is this even possible? or is there some other use behind the addition of the controllers.

You don't have to make up Cubase Expression Maps for yourself. I have seen in your records, that you have registered the Special Edition and the Special Edition PLUS. We prepared Expression Maps for these products. They can be downloaded at the following location:

I' been trying out the Expression maps but have had no luck figuring out how to make vertical span movements with the mod wheel?
From the expression map I can see only about a third of the articulations have key switches mapped to them. Is there a way to control the rest or would I need to make manual settings for each one?

A controller that is contained in an Expression Map can't be used live with a hardware MIDI controller. Sorry, but that's the way Steinberg designed it.
You have keyswitches for the most important articulations. The others can be triggered in the Key Editor or Score Editor.

wow! Iam very suprised that steinberg wouldnt have included MIDI performance capabilities in VST expression. To me at least that would have been the big time-saver: recording a MIDI instrument line and having all articulations and expressions written automatically to the score. What a pity, I guess I can try too map as much articulations as possible to key switches. Thanks for the help anyhow Andi.

If you are looking for the way to program modulation wheel movement in your expression map to switch between vertical cells, then here's how you can do it.
Suppose you have a matrix consisting of two vertical cells where vertical movement is controlled by the modulation wheel.
1. Set up a new expression map.
2. Create the first articulation.
3. Assign a key switch to it (in the 1st Key Switch area) in the output mapping box (you'll use this key to switch back to this matrix from other matrices, should you wish to create more of them and use them as one preset).
4. Set Controller 1 to the value of 1 (this is CC1 - your modulation wheel) and Ctl 1 Value to 0 (this will make the upper cell active whenever this articulation is chosen).
5. Create the second articulation.
6. Assign the same key switch to it as that of the previous articulation (in the 1st Key Switch area).
7. Again, Set Controller 1 to the value of 1 and Ctl 1 Value to 127 (this will make the lower cell active whenever this articulation is chosen).
That's it. I made such an expression map for the Perf_Legato_Speed_Portamento matrix of VSL Strings. If you need it i can mail it to you.

thx for uploading that russo, couldnt get the mod wheel working with exp maps so I guess Ill stick to key switches for the moment
