  • Switching from VSL Pro Edition (2 computers running Giga 3) to Vienna Instruments Symphonic Cub...

    Hi,

I am upgrading my library and have some questions.  I'll be running Vienna Instruments on a dedicated computer with 24GB of RAM.  Sonar will be my sequencer on another machine.  What sequencing techniques will change?  Is there any way to change patches and/or articulations other than keyswitching?  Should I consider more than 24 GB?

Currently, when I require attack and release times to be altered in a phrase (within an articulation) I enter control changes into Sonar and Gigastudio responds.  How does the Vienna Instruments player handle this?  Will I have more control over nuance, phrasing and articulation, and will it be automated in the player or can I still give sequencing instructions via Sonar for things like patch change, envelope, velocity, etc?

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions!!!!

  • Speaking as a user of Vienna on Sonar 7 PE.  I would say it all works like a charm.  I've never had any serious issues and I don't have half the system you have.  Then again, I'm not running the entire cube on it either.

Keyswitching is one way of switching between patches but you can use your mod wheel or load up a speed matrix and let Vienna do all of the switching.  Velocity too I think.

Attack and release can be altered in real time while you, or your sequencer, are playing.

  • Thanks for replying.  So I gather that the traditional way of changing patches (entering a patch change into Sonar's event list) doesn't work or apply any more with VI?    The reason I like this method is I can see, in my sequence, which articulation is being used in any part of the musical phrase.  If I don't use key-switching, you're saying that VI will automate that?  But in the middle of a phrase lets say I am switching between legato and staccato violins, how would VI know exactly when I want the articulation to change?

    Thanks!

I'm not familiar with Sonar's event list feature so you may in fact still be able to switch patches the way you are used to.  As far as knowing which artic I am using, I build my own orchestral templates using Vienna Ensemble.  I build them by instrument family and I keep all of the keyswitches the same, or as close as possible, for every template so I don't even think about which keyswitch I need to get the artic that I want.  I've memorized them so I just know which one I'm using.

If you are refering to the speed matrix, the video found about speed matrices can better explain how this works than I can.  The video and other VI training videos can be found here:  http://vsl.co.at/en/211/1343/1348/1523/1148.vsl

I tend to use a lot of legato and sustains in my compositions so I load the basic Level 1 Speed matrix for my legato, portamento and sustain needs because that matrix is designed for that kind of use.  For stacc and other artics I switch to a custom designed keyswitch based matrix.
