  • Which articulations, techniques and expression commands work in each Special Edition package?

     Hi all,

I am using Sibelius 5.2.5 with the standard VSL Special Edition.

Is there a "list" available of which articulations, techniques and expression commands in Sibelius are performed by the Special Edition, and by the Special Edition Plus?

Explained further; I know the command "legato" in Sibelius makes the VSL instrument play legato, and dynamic articulation (p/mp/mf/f etc) are all also played back properly. But is there a complete list available of what articulation, techniques, and expression commands are understood in the two VSL Special Editions when used in a Sibelius score? It would be most helpful.

    Kind regards,

    Shayne.

    Hi shayneberry_29209

If you go to your user area needful things you will see the files asociated with sibelius or finale ( as probably you already did). Basically , whatever articulation and techniques are in the SE and SE+ must be in the sound sets as well ...If you want to find out what articulation for ex. is supported in the SE + what you can do is to take a look on the samples content (http://vsl.co.at/en/211/261/314/1606/1618/596.htm) in the presentation page ,and what's in there you're gona find in the sound set.

    all the best

  •  regarding what commands, you should be able to see in your house style file ; I work right now for a period of time with finale , but as far as I remember this is the way!

  • Hello Shayne!

In the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual you can find a list of articulations and how you can trigger them with Sibelius. You can download the manual here:

  •  thats fantastic, very much appreciated all.

    I do have another queory that's fairly relevant;

Hairpins, do they work from Sibelius to VSL? If so, what info do they require beforehand and afterwards.

For example, if I want a few bars to start at pp (20), and go all the way up to say fff (127), would the commands pp,hairpin, fff do the trick?

Or would I be best including hidden messages to take the passage up each step as required (eg pp, pui p, p spread out through the passage right up to fff) then hide the instructions and put a hairpin in there for visual purposes.

Or possibly, run a hidden CC message and use a hairpin for visual reasons.

Or, does the hair pin work, does it know what velocity to start at and end at etc?

    many thanks.

  • Hello Shayne!

Just writing dynamics and hairpins will do. I recommend using Velocity Crossfade for strings, winds and brass. For more details take a look at the "Optimzing Sibelius Playback" manual, page 15.

    Best,
